Where can you find a good set of cards with good instructions on 6 card repeat?

I wonder if you could do this effect by using alphabet cards that end up spelling a 6 letter word. The kids could follow the word better and relate to it. The idea is that your trying to learn how to spell this great word. It is an idea and I wonder if it could lead to an intersting way of performiong this for the children. Any thoughts?

You're laughing but that could really be the basis for a great comedy adult bit for the proper audience. I am still wondering though if you could use alphabet cards for a children's version of the effect. I would think you could if you made sense of the patter or story line. It could also possibly be used for the basis of a drug awareness show or a themed show. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Has anyone played around with this idea or given it a shot? Curious.

It's not for my style but Tim Ellis has a version of Six Card Repeat that is done to Rap Music, involves an assistant, etc. It's a very funny and entertaining version to be sure.
I believe he markets this effect. Frank

You are right. I saw Tim Ellis at the SAM Nationals in Vegas this summer. He performed this routine and is indeed marketing it now. It is a hilarious routine and works well for his character.

I know it's a classic, but I've never cared for this effect. I guess I don't want even a hint that I use gimmicked cards, so I shy away from it.

You do not have to use gimmicked cards to do a six-card repeat effect. And if you have a great story or patter to go with this, the audience will be to busy laughing and having fun to even want to attempt to figure it out.

I do the six bill repeat and kids love it. I do it like I can't understand it.
"I spent 3 dollars and I had 1-2-3-4-5-6-wait a minute..." etc "Magician in Trouble" Kids find it hilarious, and relate to it better than cards, although I like the idea of using Uno or trading cards. Maybe I will have to make a set..

This particular routine is not for kids, but I once read of a 5 card repeat where the cards were a poker hand. Each time the magician discarded, he got a better hand. Can't remember where I read it, maybe an old Linking Ring.
The biggest problem (to me) is that the trick doesn't have a finish - it just ends. Although, I seem to recall one version that the magician does his final count and asks the kids, "Do you know how many I have left?" Of course, the kids shout, "Six!" The magician says that they're close; he has only one card (shows it) but that it is a six (turns it around to show the face). Tate |

If I'm not wrong, the six bill repeat is in Mark Wilson Encyclopedia, including how to make the gimmick.
I use this kind of effect for kids using five ropes, and sometimes use a gospel application on it. Regards, Budi Ha Ha |

I've always hated this effect because the classic story line recounts events that happened before sucking out any sort of immediacy the effect might have had.
Who cares about a magician going to shop and blah blah blah? Adults and kids both want something that is immediate and personal that engages them not some boring story that doesn't end! What if you did it as a math test? "Ok kid's if I have six cards and throw away three..how many do I have? Yes! That's right...I have one two three...HANG ON....four five six! That was magic! Let's try again? What is six minus three? What again!!!" You could end with three cards and get the kids to give themselves a clap and make a big deal. |

I think Nicholas is right as well as PB. This effect is a classic. I just feel that it is more of a classic for adult crowds than it is for children.
I think Nicholas is on the right track here. I think the 6-card repeat can be made into a fun and exciting effect for children if the presentation is changed and directed more to something they can better relate to. It makes it fun for them and adds in more chances for laughter and interaction. It goes back to the idea that it really is not the trick that makes the magic, it is the presentation and what you do with the effect. Just my opinion is all.

Thanks for the kind words. I do think a creative alternative, like the spelling of a word or a math test, opens you up to more creative ideas. It also makes it more enjoyable for the kids as they can relate better to what you are presenting. I will have to play around with alphabet cards and see what words and routines could stem from this. I guess the hard part of the routine would be having a reason to discard some of the letters. Maybe the reason is that you're trying to learn how to spell the word "school" and each time you try and spell it.. you end up 2 letters short. Then you can have the kids help you out to get it right. What do you all think?

I talked with Tim Ellis and he is not marketing his six card repeat effect that he does to rap music. According to Tim this is his signature effect and he is not going to sell or market this. He is selling his rap song on CD that is used during his effect.

I use the six bill repeat in my kid show. I use it as sort of a running gag during the whole show. I place the discarded bills in a glass on the table, saying I will now perform the incedible three bill trick!... oops, too many; put away three, and now the incredible three bill trick!... oops, too many... and so on. The kids love it.

What is the best way to gaff the cards? Diagonal cut or V cut on the side? Is there any on the market that are top quality cards in a jumbo size? Thanks for the info.
Steve Where can I find a good Jumbo Six card repeat or instructions to make my own? I looked at the el duco cards but they are hard to work with.
