Now there's a beautiful thing. Makes waiting for the mini Zibit water elephant all the more excruciating. Is this guy realy going to be put on ice?

Like horse, this pachadee must be much older than its future larger selves. How delicate its folds and adorable its demeanor! Such a unique ark you fill and inhabit, Doug!

Your stuff looks adorable. I only wish I had the inspiration and the personality to use them.

Cool... that it would be displayed encased in ice.
What a great Thing, I hope you get to have some fun taking it out for the crowds. |

Doug - are you sure you didn't have an ancestor that worked on an item called the Platypus? This beastie looks really cute!

2 ways to go on the 'Ice'...either a small freezer unit for a real block of ice OR in a block of Lucite. However...seeing it as I do in a glass case, it looks so real I am now hesitant to do so...I don't want to risk messing it up.
Glad everyone likes it! I finally did one the Grandkids like!

Doug - The ice way may cause things to split as the water impregnates the material (leather I'm guessing?). Lucite would be better - maybe after that, a small layer of frozen water on the top with a small misting unit / dry ice or something similar (consumer available dry ice is plentiful in the US but a rarety over in the UK) to make it look as if it's frozen all the way through? I'm not sure if the differences in the refractive indexes may be noticable at the interface (maybe covered with a strip aroudn the top of the tank like those around fish tanks?).
Another way - if in lucite and then cooled down to zero C' water vapour would freeze on the sides of the tank (& mist off) making it look like a solid block also. A Peltier freezing unit could be placed under the block to keep it cool permanently whilst on display. Just thinking aloud. |

With respect Ian...the point is NOT have it seem like a prop. A real mummified carcas stays put. It is for 'display' to foster a mystery of the imagination, not to make somebody recoil or jump.

Doug,
Are you familiar with the australian artist Patricia Piccinini? I ask because The effect of your exhibits for me is similar to, although not exactly like what I get from looking at her creatures. If you're unfamiliar with her sculptures, a google image search produces a number of examples. This creature is lovely. I was marvelling at it this morning.

Thank you for the kind words. Was not familir with her work so thanks for the look.
I don't see my stuff as that eclectic or gallery bound...or even serious art for that matter. They are 'tools' that have to work for a living. At best they are Outsider Art when taken in context of the purpose. Glad you think so though! Also, I find your signature very interesting! "If a lion could speak, we would not understand him. ~Ludwig Wittgenstein" This is on my Voice Over Demo page: B.B. King once said of Doug... "If a Lion had to make a point, it would use Doug's voice..." In a LONG Radio/TV career, Doug has dealt with countless Stars and Celebrities. As a Radio Talk Show Host interviewing the BIG names of entertainment and as a Producer/ Director/Writer, having worked with such luminaries as Sammy Davis Jr., Rip Taylor and even Liberace. Of the hundreds of 'Star' interviews Doug did over the years one of the favorites was with Blues Legend, Mr. B.B. King. This took place at Lake Tahoe in the 80's. Mr. King came to the studio on a weekend day when it was just Doug and B.B. kickin' back on the microphone, recording an interview for a later play. The consumate gentleman showed his sence of humor and even knocked out a riff on an unplugged Lucille(!). During the conversation, a couple of the commercials Doug had voiced were inserted, B.B. recognized the voice and made the quoted comment to the radio audience. A wonderful compliment from a great entertainer like B.B. King is hard to forget even if the 'rest' of the conversation is lost in time." And that kiddies is how LionPoint.com got it's name.

That's an amazing story Doug! I had a brief encounter with Mr. King myself, years ago when I was a music student at Berklee College of Music and was blown away by how approachable and gentlemanly he was. He's truly one of the true treasures of American culture.

Doug, it's interesting that you labeled your creations "Outsider Art". You DO know that's the kind of stuff that turns up on Antiques Roadshow selling for thousands of dollars... AFTER the artist dies, don't you?

If I thought that would work, I'd croak and come back and sell it on TV.
I've heard rom a few that my stuff will inflate quite a bit when I kick off. Whatever. I wish it would do so a little bit now! I suppose all I need to do is raise prices but I can't bring myself to do it. Knuckle head me.

Stop yapping and get back to the sweat shop. Those heads aren't going to make themselves. At least not without help from the monkey paws…
Just kidding. |
