Over the years, I have had three effects created specifically for the patriotic theme.
Mine are Flagtastick: three r,w,b silks are shown and become a flag on a flagstick. (four stars in Genii mag). Blendo Tie: 3 silks (r,w,b) are shown and blend into a men's tie with a flag design (4 stars). And, Traveling silks (4stars in Genii): acrobatic silks without the bar. R,w,b silks. What do you have? I have used a Flag Blendo, and a silk to flag (vernet tip), as well.

I created a flag on flag pole production from a small box using the 8' Appearing pole principle. The pole was covered in silver vinyl and really looked solid. (Even has a nice solid looking flag pole topper on it) Used it in a magic convention competition once and took first place!

My Flagtastick effect: is a commando style, and far surpasses any Flag production to date. Just recently bought and used by Jeff McBride. The 8' pole production was actually my design in 1977, but I always found it problematic. It was more of a joke item. (it was part of my lecture back then, and copied by anyone who saw the lecture, It was actually a shower curtain rod cover, plastic and came in 12 colors.)
The Flagtastick effect is using 100% silks. And unlike a mere production of a flag, you vanish 3 12" diamond silks and have an instant flag on a flagpole, because it uses a silver appearing cane as the action device. It is instant, and commando magic. Old demo from 1983 lecture. http://magicians.podbean.com/flagtastick/ The newer version uses a 24" x 30" silk flag.

I actually have a complete show that teaches the history of the American Flag. It has been a while since I've performed the complete show, but I perform bits and pieces of it quite often. I am very particular in what I peform that involves The Flag. I just hate having to justify to other magicians why I don't perform certain Flag effects.
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

Margarette, I am curious, why would other magicians want you to justify what Flag effects you do? Is there a group of magicians going around saying "YOU MUST DO or NOT DO these effects"? I would think if you have developed a complete show and have your reasons on what parts you perform and when, that is your business and the concerns of your audience.

Although I am a Canadian, I have a routine idea that involves the American flag that you may like.
If you are interested PM me. All the best, Rob |

Craig, I will explain, but will leave it at that. I have no problems discussing parts of my American Flag Show, but I would rather not hear from other magicians that I could do this effect or that effect or that I'm wrong for my opinions on certain other effects (after I explain, hopefully you will understand).
When I perform a single routine from my show, I usually perform my Salute to Veterans routine which is my closer for the show. Magicians will see this routine, then ask me about what Mis-Made Flag routine I use. Trying not to get into some major philosophical discussion, I state simply that I choose not to do a mis-made flag routine. I have yet to be able to leave it at that because I'm always asked "why?" To which, I then respond that I personally feel that mis-made flag is disrespectful to what the Flag stands for. I did perform the routine ONCE, and when the blue silk is dropped to the ground, it left a bad taste in my mouth. I threw away the instructions and put the mis-made part of the silks into a corner and have not picked them up since. I will admit that I do use the red, white, and blue silks from that routine. Now, every time I say why I don't do the routine, I always get the same response...."it's not disrespectful.....if you do the routine the way I do, it should be perfectly fine...." I think I've heard of and seen at least two dozen performances of mis-made flag, but none strike me as something I could ever see myself performing. The conversation usually ends with the other magician telling me I need to re-think my "problem" with the mis-made flag. I wonder what they would say if I told them that I cringe every time I see a Flag routine, and when the Flag is produced, the first thing I see is NOT the union gripped in the right hand. I refused to hand a Flag to a stagehand during one show because he walked in front of the Flag to take it from me...and before the show, I stressed to him the importance of NOT walking in front to take the Flag, and that I better not see any of my Flags on the floor when I returned backstage. So, to make a long story longer, magicians see one routine of my show, and I have to justify to them why I don't do mis-made flag. If it gets too bad, I usually challenge them to a round of American Flag Trivia. Margarette

In this day and age it's refreshing to see someone who shows respect to the flag of our country. If other magicians don't understand your thinking on this matter then shame on them.

Margarette,
I agree with your tihinking. there are too many other effects that can be done without using the American flag. Years ago, Tommy Windsor thought the same thing which is why he came up with the mismade diagonal silk and gave the rights to my mentor, Horace Marshall. Richard

Marketing is another thing. If you are making a blendo, or a mismade pattern, the Flag is a natural due to universal appeal. I had to send out my Flagtastick to the UK and some other Euro nations over the years.
I always used U.S. made goods, both flags and silks. I used Collegeville Flag company in Pennsylvania to make all of my mismade components. They made me sign a statement that the blank flags (missing the field of stars) would not be reprinted with anything that would disgrace the flag. When dealing with flags and kids, I always thought it was a great way to re-introduce the flag to children.

Margarette, thanks for your answer. It is good you handle the flag with respect. Too bad there are some people who refuse to understand the reasons or feelings of others.

I don't slam anyone if they choose to do mis-made flag. That is a personal choice. Just as I have made a personal choice NOT to perform it. I spent three years putting this routine together. I started working on it in 1999 and debuted the act at a church for July 4th celebration in July 2001. It is a history lesson on the evolution of the Flag, "The Star Spangled Banner", and "Old Glory" as the Flag's nickname. I have reasons for performing what I do and for what I've chosen to eliminate. If people leave my Flag show knowing one piece of information they didn't before the show started, then I have accomplished my mission.

Ian, I have one of your old flagtastic and have used it for years. We even used it on a promo picture. From the sounds of it, I'm going to have to get the newer version. Great stuff. Keep it coming.

Thanks Ray,
Improvements started when I decided to use some Dovelite diamond silks instead of square. This allowed me to increse the size of the silks and not the volume. Then, silk flags, then improve the attachment method and with a streamline "load", I use a black tubelike sleeve (in hindsite it is much like the flagstaff bags). Anyway, we also eliminated tape so that the entire thing is so streamline and fast, it is virtually another effect. Thanks for the comment, I would love to see the promo pic. -Ian

I stopped selling them for a long time due to the price of appearing canes. Now, the canes are relatively low priced, and good quality, and with 30 years of re-evaluation, I improved the effect and made it faster plus the addition of pure silk components made the whole thing 200% more streamlined. I also added a simple device holder which allows for a one-handed commando style performance. It is a one handed 3 silks to a flag on a flagpole.

Margarette: Great idea !!!!! Continue on. It's super to hear of a historical, yet entertaining show in a patriotic vein. We need more of this today.
You are to be congratulated on your respect for the flag you proudly present to the public. Thanks! Frank |

I read this thread with great interest as my Colour Change Vest has the option of a Stars and Stripes or Union Jack option as standard (or simply red, white and blue stripes).
I have had customers praise the Old Glory finale, others buy the Union Jack, others wanting different colours or an alternative finale - all from the States. A dealer from Italy asked for the vest to be produced with the Italian flag and colours (which has sold very well). I have also produced vests with flags from Sweden, Czech Republic, Puerto Rico, Germany, Austria, Ireland, and had requests from other countries which I have not been able to oblige (due to manufacturing limitations). A dealer in France has only bought one size American vests from me - I don't know to whom he sells. The whole patriotic/non-patriotic business is very strange, and I guess extremely personal to each individual performer and each audience. In Spain for example the idea of a Spanish flag finale on the vest was out of the question, as each canton flies its own flag as opposed to the official flag. Apart from Mis-made silks, what other patriotic themed effects are out there? |
