There's a lot of annoyance when mentalist pretend to actually be psychic, but I've seen a lot of mentalists who pretend to be psychological experts when all they're really doing is magic. Is this technically the same as pretending to be psychic? I don't think so what do you guys think? How far do you push the BS?

It wasn't, and it reads contrary to my intention. I have more respect for him than many other here. |

One thing I don't understand about these recurrent debate on "real or not real" is:
1. Do people want to share their views? 2. Do people want to convince others that their view is the only one? 3. Do people look for some kind of tribe bonding by finding others that have same views? 4. Do people just feel argumentative for the sake of it?? What exactly is the point of these debates??? Personally I do what suits me and my character and couldn't care less, if I offend anybody on the other side of the planet that I just know" through my screen with a fake name on a green background." As it is so recurring, shouldn't we have a sticky thread just for that??? |

I hate the faking of being psychological experts. The reason being anyone with remote expertise in these areas will see it a mile. Plus there are some really incredible things possible for real using some of the techniques that many mentalists know very little if anything about. And it makes a mockery and confusion about the real possibilities.
This is why I hate Derrens new format. While I see Derren and his team as the best in the business I'ld rather watch a real documentary on some of the real things that can be done with the psychological techniques that many mentalists pretend badly to have. Personally I love mentalism as a tool to powerfully get a point over or to communicate an idea. I just find this need to pretend to be an expert of the mind tedious and in most cases transparent. And lazy. Unless they have taken the time and resources to develop skills for real. |

As I have said elsewhere, he has found a way to make a non-visual art form work in a visual medium (television) by showing us the psychological "process". It's far more interesting to the layman than the effect of mindreading, which impact is nearly impossible to duplicate through a pre-recorded tape. It draws in even those who scoff at magic. |

Well perhaps meaning is opinion and perception. And I don't doubt Derren and his team's genius for one moment. I just find the new format boring. And find very few lay people that actually watch it. But then Ive been exposed to Derren on tv for 9 years so perhaps I'm just jaded.
Genius or not I personally would rather watch a genuine programme about the ability of the mind and achievement. It would be much more interesting and entertaining.(in my opinion) Plus Derren is becoming more unbelievable. The last one with the cat felt so contrived and faked. As if he would kill a kitten on TV. |

But Jim, your brand of entertainment is not what I would call mentalism. Neither would I call Uri Geller's performance a mentalism performance. Personally I find nothing wrong with what you do as you are just an entertainer and not trying to "help" others get through their grief by lying to them about what has happened to the people they love. I really don't care what any performer does or what they say. Entertainment is entertainment. If you claim that a dead turtle helps you do what you do and then put on a good show, great! If you claim you use psychology when all you are doing is magic tricks and put on a good show, great! If you are really can read minds and put on a lackluster show, get off the stage!! That's how I feel about that.
When you use your "gift" to tell others where their missing sister's body is, you better be right and ready to answer questions for the cops. If your wrong, get out of the picture and stay out of it. I do believe that there are things we can't explain, and I do believe that some people do "see" things that others can't. I don't believe that people like Sylvia Brown and Van Prauge are anything but vampiric con artists waiting for the next rube to drain. And that's how I feel about that.

When they gag? that works on two levels...
anyway - you've gone too far when people laugh in the wrong places, or yawn a lot and ask for their money back... or when you put on a very shiney brightly coloured waistcoat and a plastic flower that squirts water.. whatever lie you tell, it has to have some small element of believability to it...and that believability comes from the performer...
