Hello,
Does anyone have a good patter they would like to share? The direction patter is ok but I can only go so long without the kids getting bored. Josh
If a magician is not intending to "trick" a spectator, why is every "trick" called a magic "trick"?

Hi, Josh.
I had my full routine published about a million...er, seventeen years ago in the Linking Ring, March, 1986 issue. If you had the CD of back issues, you could look it up. The basic idea is to introduce the bunny by name, saying he lives next door to his Grandma. Continue the story by saying his mom asked him not to "go next door today because your birthday is tomorrow and there might be some things over there we don't want you to see yet." Of course, he promises to be good and you carry on with him promptly sneaking over, including all the back and forth and peeking bits. Wrap up by saying if he did go over he might be in trouble because his poppa was a magic bunny and he might..disappear. Open all the doors out to show him gone and sadly put the unit away, turning around to show the extra bunny pinned to your own back. (Be ready to take it off yourself fairly quickly when they yell, otherwise they'll be happy to run up to help you!) I always play it so I'm just as surprised as the kids to find him on my back. I then say something about how I hope he learned a lesson about listening and have all the kids clap for him as I put him away. That's it in a nutshell. It's always been a favorite routine of mine for 3 to 5 year olds. P.S. Anyone know where I could get a new one that has the one-hand thumb slide mechanism like Supreme sold? I've worn out two sets so far!

Why not come up with your own patter? The reason you're not getting what you want from the trick is you are using someone else's words. A lot of stuff has been around for many years. You will find the original patter is miles out of date. A good magician buys a trick, reads the instructions and patter that came with it, and then builds his own a routine, maybe using the original patter idea as a start line. The routine will then be built around their own personality not the originator's. If you're using someone else's words, etc., your performance will not be natural, as in effect you are acting the part of the originator.

I agree, Emazdad. Run Rabbit Run is one of those silly bits that relies on a lot of personality. I have a custom prop that looks like a doll house with a cut out doll.

Thanks guys. That's a good routine there. I'll have to try it out on a few of my cousins to see if it's any good. If they are confused, which will be my main concern, then I will have to do what Emazdad says, make up my own. Thanks, Josh

If the children are getting confused check you are not using any story in the past tense. Run Rabbit Run should be in the present tense. Also a confusing thing about run rabbit run is that a lot of routines don’t have a logical reason for introducing your cut out character.
I tell the children I have a cute doll I received for my Birthday/Christmas and then ask if they would like to see it. They must promise not to laugh, however. I then introduce a very ugly cut out doll. Children can’t help but laugh when they see my cut out and I then have a logical reason to be interacting with it (I’m just playing with my dolly). The other kind of philosophy behind run rabbit run could be similar to that behind the popular movie Toy Story. If you have seen that movie, you will know all the toys come alive and play only when no one is watching. If you had some type of toy that had its own will and comes to life only when you are not watching then you have a logical plot for your run rabbit run routine that children will easily understand.
