Hadn't thought about this in years...but for some reason it came into my mind, an effect I've seen over the years several times. Does anyone know where the effect of a cigarette lighter flame passing/traveling/penetrating a silk was published or marketed? Maybe one version was with a small candle?

I have a DVD with Fred Kapps performing it. It is a candle, not cigarette lighter. The secret is in the timing.

There are two "flame thru" effects I'm familiar with - one involves a gimmicked candle, the other uses a lighter. While the former can be used with most "slick" materials, like silk, the latter is dependant on 100% cotton.
Do a Google search for "flame thru silk magic", or click here, and you'll find a few of the gimmicked candles. It's the easier of the two versions, and better looking IMO. Joe Carson's "Traveling Flame" (the one with the lighter) can be found on The Magic of Jeff McBride DVD set.

Thanks, I just noticed the reply to my today. I did check out Jeff McBride's DVD on the lighter version.

You can do it with any lighter or butane product, as the gas is burning above the flame as the silk rests against the gas source and the gas goes thru the silke material. Soooo...why not have a butane type candle.
Years ago, Jeff McBride (at age 16) has a plastic candle replica that housed a bic lighter and had a clip that held the lighter open, and that could have been used for the effect.

Ian,

The round Cricket lighter was the best for "candles". Are they still available anywhere?
