Clarissa,
I AGREE WITH YOU 100%, I just suggested Hopping Halves because Chris asked for a trick, and he also said that he is NOT new to magic. Biggest bang for the buck OVER ALL: Books and DVD's Great value for a SINGLE TRICK: Hopping Halves |

* Gonna save up for Hopping Halves*
Thanks for the recommendation If I misunderstood, I can only blame it on lack of caffeine... I'm a New Yorker, if I do not keep the Coffee flowing my mind gets fuzzy...

You might also want to get Bobo's Modern Coin Magic and Roth's Expert Coin Magic if coins is what you want to study.

Have them already. I Got The Roth series when it was on VHS, Now it's threading badly. So have to pluck up the cash and replace them.

How about cardiographic

Cardiographic not being close-up but an excellent suggestion anyways. Some possibilites, all under 100 bucks and appropriate for close-up... Masuda's Wow, Something from Viking like Ball Thru Hand or maybe something different like The Relic if you want to go into a bit of a bizarre direction. All of the suggestions about investing in books or dvd's is excellent advice and they are items that you are likely to get use of for years to come. But I understand the impulse to want to just purchase a good effect once in awhile. I would advise you to take your time until you find something that you really feel good about. Do some checking and use the Café as a resource to avoid getting something that might really have nothing but bad reviews etc.
Good luck, Glen

Can't go wrong with the basics: egg bag, professor's nightmare, invisible deck, a cheap miser's dream (half dollars and a bucket from Bed Bath and Beyond listed on a Little Darlings Miser Dream thread), a couple of silks and thumb tip, couple of the "Teach In" DVDs, and a couple of Silly Billy or David Ginn books/DVDs. Buy the stuff on Café and get it for about 70 percent of retail...

It really depends on who your target audience is and the type and style of magic you want to perform. As previous posters have said books are the way to go, however if you find it easier to learn visually a good DVD set is the way to go. I enjoy close up/street style magic, so in addition to the great stuff recommended above I would recomend anything from Gregory Wilson (on the spot, off the cuff, in action, ring leader) an excellent variety of effects with easy to find props.
the problem with spending all of your available money on one effect, is that you only end up with one effect and what do you do after that. With the above DVD's, a TT, silks, spongeballs, rubberbands, a deck of cards, pen, coins, a ring and some string (stuff that can easily fit in your pockets) you can entertain groups of people all day long.
Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat.

I'd second some of Bendy's suggestions which I'd add to a cheap 2nd hand copy of Mark Wilson's book
1. Gary Darwin's "Encyclopedia of TT Magic" 3 DVD set: Gives you a treasure trove of routines. 2. I'd extend Bendy's recommending Hot Rods to recommending paddle tricks in general; I don't have a hot rod, just a different cheap paddle instead, but there's loads of paddles out there. A routine with a knife from your kitchen - still one of the best routines involves just sticking tissue paper on it. The routine can be found in umumpteen books eg Mark Wilson & DVD's (eg Dan Harlan) 3. Jay Sankey's "Holy Moly." Great suggestion by Bendy. I'd also recommend his 3 dvd set 'The Very Best of...' alternatively if you don't like the sound of this DVD set buy Bill Mallone's 'On the Loose' (4 dvd set) instead 4. You've just about got enough money left (ok you might have to borrow another $10 on top) to buy Greg Wilson's 'On the Spot' dvd.
