As a child growing up inspired by the theatrical and production magic of David Copperfield I remember feeling awe struck by the illusion that he ended his show with for years. His snow routine was always a remarkable illusion, but I only last night after watching a movie of this illusion, realized that I don't know the entire secret. He is not using a standard snowstorm his is acctually a foam/snow fluid like machine. I am wondering is anyone knows anything about this method or would like to discuss this with me, please PM me. I would love to discuss this. Is it similar to the new gimmick being advertised in Magic and Genii magazine?

Are you talking about when it comes from his hand or when the snow goes out into the audience? I am unclear on that point.
Thanks, Leon

I believe he's speaking of the point when it comes from his hands. The camera goes in for a close-up and you can see his hands full of foam (almost as if he had just washed his hands with soap).
I don't know much about the workings it though |

Hello!
Does anybody know if you can purchase a snow illusion that uses foam instead of paper? |

I believe Kevin James sells one that may use foam. It might however use confetti. It would likely be very possible to use a theatrical snow machine, with some modifications, to produce the effect you are seeking.

Kevin James currently advertises his Snow Stool in the Magic Magazines. I have used his stool for about 3 years now and love the reaction it gets. It was his version of SnowStorm in China, and I have taken his ideas to incorporate snow machines in the audience to have the snow after the effect.
If I remember Kevin's story correctly, David Copperfield based his routine loosely on Kevin's routine. He saw Kevin's and made his own adjustments to it. It is a great routine, and has earned me some standing ovations after finally adding the right story and music. Only problem, there is one heck of a mess to clean up after every show. |

I heard through the grapevine that Kevin had a real problem with David doing his snow routine. However, if you really compare the two, you will see they they are completely different, in method and performance. I have to say that Copperfield's is much better. Kevin's uses confetti.
Believe In Magic....I do!

The snowstorm is Kevin's concept, period. HE allowed Copperfield to add it to his arsenal. Then the ungrateful Copperfield made an attempt to take the credit away from Kevin and even tried to get Kevin to stop performing it.

I really appreciate everybody' sinput however it is correct that I am talking about when the camera zooms in on his hands. I own snow machines for the paper idea ending, but I haven't yet figured out an idea of how to concentrate this production to your hands...I would love to discuss this with anyone via PM thank you!!!

Without looking at all the BS the snowstorm is an amazing trick that can really reach people and it is worth the time and effort to do it correctly no matter how you do it!
Cheers! Leon

since we are on this topic, personally i think the 'trick' which had the most impact on me performed by DC is the'Graffiti Wall'.
i try to figure out, but just couldn't. it was so clean. i did think of using stooges, e.g. tiffany was one of them, i suppose. but how did the heck did he get the telephone number, harvey and judy? oh, i not looking for an answer, but i certainly dun mind if some of u revealing it.
never try, never know

Graffiti Wall is great, but have you seen the new version of it, Lottery? It's unbelievable. To me, it blew Graffiti Wall out of the water

I find it kinda difficult to get those snowstorm (pellets) so to speak, to hover them way he does. I use a fan but it just isn't enough. Now what?

I don't believe this is what David Uses in his performance, but if they are still available, use a Mad Dog Lighter. They would be sold in a magic or joke shop, and you would have to do a steal and a ditch. If my memory serves, as it has been about ten years since I have seen one of these, it is the same foam.

I have never heard of a Mad Dog Lighter before, could you tell me more about it? Patrick Thomas |

The Mad Dog Lighter is a practicle joke item. You would give it to some one to light their cig. and it would spray them with foam.
They were refillable through thebottom of the lighter, just like a butane lighter only using a can of foam available from the same supplier as the lighter. If you were to secretly obtain thisduring your act and keep it concealed in your hands, I believe it would look very similar to the foam snow storm. When finished you would of course have to ditch it, but in the early 90's they sold for about $10 to $15.00 Giving a bit for inflation I would guess they sell for around $20.00 now. That is if you can find them, as I am unaware if they are still made. I will do alittle research and post a follow up if I can find a source for them. Ronald R. Romiski Well, I looked and this is what I came up with... Magic City and GagWorks.com both sell something called Crazy Foaming Lighter. These appear to be the same thing. However I don't know if they sell refill cans seperately, but one does come with the lighter. The good news is that they are cheaper than I remembered, only $7.49. At this price you could just buy the whole package each time you needed a refill, although I'm sure if they sell the lighter they should sell refills. In any event good luck, and have fun. Ronald R. Wow it's amazing what you guys came up with. If I were to do this I would customize to my needs.
However, the effect everyone is referring to did not use this method. I wont go into the method here. Since this is consider a public forum. DC'S version is very complicated for what you get. Well in theory it's simple but theatrically it's a nightmare to set up correctly. Unless you have access to everything and the proper people to run it. I would do some research you might just find what you are looking for. But, I would take the idea of foam and make your own method of getting it to your hands. |

Mike,
I am nt suggesting that this is what David used to accomplish his version of the snowstorm effect. I am mearly throwing this out as an economical alternitive to the more expensive methods. There are devices on the market that will accomplish this effect. They are however on the pricey side. this will cost under 10.00. But, in all honesty I couldn't even put a gaurentee on this actually achieving the desired effect. It is just theory. Ronald R.Romiski |

I just wanted to comment on the Graffiti Wall and the Lottery...I originally found both performance wonderful, but only took watching the routine on video once to figure out both, it may be because I think, "like a magician!" WONDERFUL MISDIRECTION!!!!
