I was quite fortunate that Derren's tour and West End run coincided with my trip to the UK, so I saw it twice. It's a remarkable show, and I highly recommend you beg, borrow and/or steal to get a ticket. There is stuff in there that will have the most knowledgable mentalist scratching their head, and thinking "What the...". Go, go go!!

I saw the show last week in London.
It was brilliant- a masterclass in staging, presentation and showmanship. Some of the routines were beautiful things to behold, but the best part was the way that elements of each routine were repeatedly re-introduced to tie the whole show together. The opener (for which he is not even onstage) was very clever, and made use of those old 'change blindness' films - and then he promised a live recreation of the same thing onstage which, when it came, just before the interval, turned out to be something else altogether. The 'oracle' section that dominates the second act has been criticized by some- but on the night I was there he was really scoring and he had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand. As a non-civilian, there was plenty to appreciate (including a clever throwaway in-joke during his seance) and his technique and handling of each piece were inspired. His unusual variation of the tossed out deck (done without tossing the deck) was a great example of how much value can be milked from a simple single effect, and his method of selection of a spec for his final encore kicker was incredibly clever. The show only runs for another week or two... Kill for tickets..

I think it lovely that ye lesser persons purchase the hype and consider this fellow above yourselves. It's so.... well, American. And yet some of you are actually British, erm ...make that Irish, but it still counts.
C'mon, have a wee bit more faith in yourselves. Pull yourselves up and believe that it's possible, just possible, that you might be in the same league as DB, even though he's at the other end (based on what you tell me repeatedly), But alas, for I fear the answer.... nay. And this is why apart from the young 'Jermays' no one moves forward. tut tut. bobser. ps: Me? Gimme' a fair crack of the whip someone, I dare you!!!

Even the finest musicians were able to appreciate the greatness of Heifetz. And without bitterness, I might add.

My guess is that Virungan's refering to DB telling the audience something along the lines of "19 Losander Avenue, Putney" as being the home of the psychic, just before the table lifting effect.
But yeah, awesome show throughout and the gorilla "reveal" particularly still makes me grin. :) |

Bobser, not sure if your tongue is firmly planted in cheek when you're responding in this post, but if not, you're way off track on this one.
No one is suggesting that Brown is 'untouchable' in some manner befitting royalty, and, as such, should be raised on a pedestal beyond criticism. But having seen the show (FYI, I'm neither from the U.K. nor the U.S., so any attempts on my part at self-deprecation are clearly not Nationalistic, but genetic), I can agree Brown's work is truly 'state of the art,' and as such, should be celebrated for what it is. This notion to disparage someone because he has gained attention and notoriety, comes across as veiled resentment bordering on jealousy. Now, if your posts have been intentionally tongue-in-cheek or simply attempts to provoke response....I stand corrected. |

Forgot to mention, at the show I was at, the film director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth etc) was sitting behind me and was clearly loving every minute...
