When I meet magicians and/or guests at the Magic Castle It’s always a positive experience. Most of the time when I meet fellow magicians they ask, “What sort of magic do you do?” I tell them my parlour act is Mentalism. Their response has never been negative.
Whenever I perform impromptu for guests while I’m there, I usually get a hand shake or nod from the magicians that witnessed the entertainment. I believe the term “Magicians Helping Magicians” really applies to the Magic Castle. Mentalists are included in that term by the way… While I’ve been polishing my Parlour Act for my formal performance there in late July, I have received overwhelming support and advice from other magicians that sincerely care about me doing well. |

DerZauberer, can't wait to see you perform in July. I've really enjoyed my few visits to the Castle in the past few weeks - it's nice to find one thing about LA that my wife and I actually enjoy - (do we sound like the bitter New Yorkers we are or what?)
My 2 cents on "Magician of the Mind" label (I'm new but since I started the thread, I guess I can weigh in - it's not in what you say, it's in how you say it. If you hit it too "on the nose" (not to mention with Abraxus' lighting and sound design) - it's cheesy. If said/written/presented subtly in the right atmosphere, I'm sure it's effective. My "day job" is writing and directing genre films and TV (horror films, thrillers, sci-fi etc) - and it's a problem I run into constantly with actors who can't deliver "heightened" language - some people can handle performing a scene where they're terrified by a ghost or serial killer while others come off as frenzied chihuahuas. As in our own work, it all in the presentation. caveat: no offense meant to any actors I've worked with, serial killers, ghosts or chihuahuas. |

Mr. X
I enjoy horror, real fry the brain and shock the soul horror. But I also enjoy schlock. I'm even a member of the Troma fan club. Each has an audience and has their own charms. Tony |

Tony, I'm the first to readily admit that some of my stuff belongs in the "Troma" section but hey, the bills have to get paid whether I like it or not.

I think some of the postings in this thread should provide you with all the answers to questions you have about antagonism, MrX.

I'm sorry if I came of as insulting or demeaning to anyone here.
If so I did not mean to or realize it. Everything I've said in this thread was pointed at me, or so I thought. Tony Iacoviello |

Was someone libeled by someone else saying a phrase "sounds fairly cheesey"? or is the libel part just for completeness?

To the original poster's question:
Why do you care what anyone thinks of you? Just do what you want and go with your passion. Your audience doesn't know what is a mentalist. Your audience is more important than what magicians think of you. |

Poison, thanks for the direct response to the question. Wasn't asking the question because I plan to change what I do because of someone else's opinion. However, I do like to be armed with the most amount of information possible when working in specific environments - and in rare cases I hope to use someone's expectation to turn the tables on them. But again, your point is well taken.
