Hi,
I feel that like in every routine you create, your first effect is very important. I usually start with my own effect: "Word Vision" in short, it is "A word from the mind" effect that is fast and clean and everything can be left with the audience. Cheers Roni |

I admit that I'm very new to this sort of thing, but would have to ask, the first effect or the first effect the audience beleives happens?

There is a whole forum on the Café devoted to mentalisim. I would wager a few days perusing its contents would give you more than the answer to your question.
Happy hunting!

Cups and Balls is a nice opener for a mentalist.
In fact, it's exactly what I do. |

Actually a routine I have been performing as an opening effect is based off the street hustle "3 card monte" entitled fine the soul.
inscribing a spell on the card it captures the soul of the spectator and he must find his soul or.... it seems to play really well. but its close up effect.....maby jumbo cards for stage? |

Hehehe.
How about the ol' magic coloring book. And Curator...turquoise is still wrong..it was even a more-off green color but I'm thinking of an entirely different color now. |

Greenish-gray pink with just a subtle hint if purple?
... and to stay on the subject, I would start with something fairly "light" to capture the interest ..

He was also credited with making the first impression pad (from papyrus)in 2,594 B.C. The pad was later ripped off my a Roman guy named Magicus Makerus in 2,592 B.C. |

Gold on Black but in Lament configuration !
Roth, I wasn't kidding with the Cups and Balls... I start telling that I can read the future about what will happen in two minutes. 5 tarot cards lie on the table, face hidden and the spec chooses one. He picks the Magician (the four others are Death, The Hanged Man, the Fool and the Tower - 4 Bad Omens). But he chooses the Magician, the one with cups, balls, wand... And I start with my Cups and Balls routine. Exactly what is predicted. Then I go back to a mix of straight mental experiences and storytelling (including Paradise Lost, Equivox and more) (It still pretty hard to find a virgin nowadays) |

I think that an opener trick have to be more or less quickly and impresive. I think that in a Mentalism live show, you have to demostrate that you are a good mentalist in the first trick before you talk about yourserlf.
Roni, I like the idea, can you explain the effect people see???? |
