Can anyone give me more details on Star Magic? I am told that Star Magic was the the company before P&L.
Thanks: Ron |

No. Star Magic was a company out of El Paso, Texas. They made the wandering lipsticks and a few other items. They appeared in the late 1940's - early 1960's.
There was no relationship between Star Magic and P&L.

Thanks Bill. I was mis-informed then. I was told that the one of the owners of Star started P&L. Are their items very collectable? I have a Rice Bowl set that is in mint condition with a hallmark "SM" on the bottom.

P&L was started roughly 1917, when Tom Lewis was joined by John Petrie. Later, Lewis backed out of the company.
Star Magic items are definitely collectible.

Two different ones, then. Still no connection to P&L that I can see. Maybe Mario Carrandi has some info on them.

P&l was connected to Gilbert at one time but not with Star at anytime.

Well at least I'm a little younger old Geezer. What's worse is if they don't care.
Jim Steinmeyer should be lesson to all these up and coming guys to study the past. He has revived and retooled some of the greatest magic in history for today's audiences. There is a lot to be learnt from the past. Richard

BTW, I was just looking at an old BAT. There was also a Star Magic in Oregon in the 1940's.
Sure confuses things when they all have the same name. Richard

The Star Magic in Oregon was owned by Stan Payne in Portland. He made the Wandering Lipsticks, and also "Star Flowers" (Spring Flowers) and the Star Tables (lightweight aluminum tripod base - I'm looking at one as I write this) and the Star Backdrop Frame - also lightweight aluminum. It was great stuff. Stan died in 1959, just as he was to become President of the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians. His wife, Hazel, took over the office and became the first woman President of PCAM (and probably one of the first female Presidents of a major magic organization.)

Was the Star Magic logo an SM in which the letters were basically rounded to almost form a circle?
Or might that have been Stull Magic?

I could be wrong but I think that there was also a 'Star' Magic Company in the U.K. around the late 1940's period. Does the name Tubby Allison ring a bell with anyone?
Leslie.
Stories....?....That's telling!

Is this the set of Rice Bowls sold at the Martinka auction?
Posted: Aug 9, 2008 12:57pm I'm trying to find some definitive information on this particular hallmark. Many of the Stull items I have seen do not have any kind of hallmark at all. Others have the word STULL on them. Photos of a set of cups and a set of rice bowls with this hallmark have been circulating on the internet since June, and I'm trying to verify them. If anyone has a set of instructions from Stull that has that hallmark on them, it would help me track this down.

I had a pair of those. They were really great, unless you accidentally hit one of the legs. Then they went AOT.

Based on this information. I would say mine is a Stull. Any idea if this is more valuable or price?
