I have no personal stories but Jon Stewart referenced Criswall to Al Gore last week and I always show Plan 9 as well as Ed Wood to my students each Hallow Eve.

Criswell really wasn't part of "the magic crowd." He basically played it as straight as he could when he was dealing with what he admitted was a by product of the alimentary processes of the equine.
He would have been more likely to have made contact with legitimate actors than magicians.

Here is a bit of trivia. Only one person played himself in the movie Ed Wood. Who was it?

At my age, I don't date much.
Actually, in this case, I had met Korla Pandit. When I was a kid, he had a wonderful television show, and I watched and listened to him play. His "hook" was that he played the Hammond Organ (a BV, by the way, so he told me) and a piano that were set at right angles to one another, so he could access both instruments simultaneously. He also wore a turban. One of these days, I'll post the story about meeting him.

" Plan 9" was, I believe, the first movie to have the aliens say that humans were destroying the Earth with pollution; beating the remake of " Day the Earth Stood Still" by about sixty years.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

In the late 60s, Criswell predicted the end of the world would be august 24, 1999. On that date, the Casini Space probe whipped around the eart on it's way to Saturn carrying 72 pounds of plutonium... Had it not been for some good enginerring he may have been right.

I just ran across Criswell's book here. It's a 1968 first edition. It is hardbound with dust jacket. If anyone is interested in it, just PM me.

Before I became a full-time magician, I was a musician. After the Great Folk Music Scare of the 1960's, I played for about a decade on the pizza parlor circuit (it may sound like a bad gig, but the money was very good, and I didn't have to go on the road!!!).
One evening, one of my regular customers mentioned that when I played certain pieces on the electronic keyboard, it reminded him of Korla Pandit. So, I told him that when I was a kid and we got our first TV set, I used to watch the show just about every day. KP's sound must have worked its way into my memory. But after his intial career on television (he had the first nationally syndicated musical TV show that featured a single performer), he kinda disappeared. This particular customer had some of KP's albums. I got the numbers off of them and ordered them from my favorite LP store. I also discovered that KP was now touring for the Thomas Organ company, and he was going to be appearing in Houston during the coming September. About that time, I had decided that I wanted to go into magic full time. So I began to attend magic conventions. At the TAOM convention in Arlington, TX, 1973, Van Cleve mentioned that one of the best pieces to use for background music to a spooky performance was KP's "Tale of the Underwater Worshippers," which also happened to be the music Kalanag used for his levitation. Cleve also mentioned that KP seemed to have disappeared. So, after Cleve's lecture, I told him that KP was now touring, demonstrating Thomas Organs at local music stores and that I was taking a group of friends to see him the following week. Cleve asked me to give me a report about KP the next time we crossed paths. So, the day of the demonstration came. My wife took an early lunch at her office. My friend, his girlfriend, my wife and I showed up for the KP demo. I went up to him before the demo, introduced myself to him and told him that I had watched him on TV when I was a kid. That's when he gave me the info about the Hammond BV. Anyway, during the demo, he played a bunch of standards -- Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, etc. Then he said, "And now it's time for a command performance. If you have ANY song you would like for me to play, just name it, and if I know it, I'll be glad to play it for you." In a single voice, the four of us called out "Tale of the Underwater Worshippers!" KP nearly fell off the organ bench! He was obviously surprised that anyone remembered that piece. He said, "Someone is familiar with my work!" And he played a version of it that was twice as long as the one on the recording. Afterwards, I purchased an album he had for sale, which he autographed for me. He was a very nice man who pretended to be Indian. And he did it very well. So well, in fact, that all of us pretended right along with him. Because there was no reason not to do so. And it made his legend stronger.

Thanks for the link. I enjoyed perusing the website, and was particularly struck by the photo of KP with Paramahansa Yogananda.
Do you know how it was that KP took his name and persona? |
