I am brand spanking new to performing magic. I have loved watching it performed for years and decided "What the heck, it can't be that hard!"
After reading a million trick reviews and deciding my wife would divorce me if I spent my son's college fund on magic tricks, I purchased Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. I love it! I am currently reading through it and am practicing the concealments in Chapter 1. (The back palm has caused more than its share of naughty words) One interesting thing that I have noticed is that I am left-handed when working with coins. I write, throw, kick, and do everything else right-handed. But a concealment or pass that I fumble with for thirty minutes right-handed, I can pick up in three or four tries left-handed. Is this unusual? I am practing with both hands, but thought this was kind of strange. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks.

I am left handed and to my coin stuff with my right. I cant classic palm a coin in my left to save my life. Bobo's book is very good but don't bother learning the back palm. More recent sleights have been created that are much easier and more natural like the middle finger clip and goshman pinch - at least that is my opinion.

Thanks Levitate! I'll try not to lose toom much sleep over my pitiful back palm. I noticed your point about it not looking very natural. I read a post in another thread where Curtis Kam mentioned holding a card to mask the unatural look.
I have read the threads on recommended books and videos, but which video would be a better companion to Bobo, Ammar's Complete Intro to Coin Magic or Roth's video? I will probably purchase both at some time, just not right now. Thanks!

Hello Catbacker,
You are in NYC? You might want to meet the folks in the books and hang out at the shop and Sateruday gang. Meet David Roth and get motivated! Michael Rubenstein (MSR) comes around too.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I think he's in Manhattan, Kansas, Jon. But since you extended the invitation, where do these greats hang out and when? Maybe I could use it as an excuse to take a trip to New York.

But first, I would suggest reading the Bobo's Study Guide found at this link - http://www.zyworld.com/coinpurse/Articles90.htm Then buy Ammar's. Hope this helps. |

Thanks guys!
Jon: Sanskara is right. I live in Manhattan, Kansas the Little Apple. I really appreciate the invite though. That's the problem with living in a smaller college town. There isn't much of a magic community. Thank goodness for the internet! Magix: I am actually using the study guide from Coin Purse. You're right. It's been very helpful. I am leaning towards the Ammar video, but will eventually probably end up with both.

I have some "left handed" half dollars for sale. They're only $2.00 each. Let me know how many you need...

Some moves are easier for this right hander with my left hand.
I first learned the roll down left handed. Now I do it with both. For the Kansan Cat will you be coming to KC for the IBM convention. If so perhaps we can get a coin jam going. Of course there is always the old gag. I'd give my right arm to be amidextrous. Harris

Harris: The place I work is a big IBM shop. When is the convention? Do you live in KC? It's where I grew up. My folks still live there. It would be great to get to know some of the magic community in KC since I don't think there is much here in Manhattan.

I grew up in Kansas City.
Now I live in Shawnee about 20 minutes west. Yes although I have not registered I plan on doing so and attending the convention. Just listen for the horshack laugh(from the old welcome back carter show) and you will probably find me. Magic is alive and well in Kansas City, There are quite a few people that do some cool magic and other close up stuff. Of course we also have illusionist like the next IBM Prez David Sandy. (who is a real asset to our Magical Community, not only for the great Workshop in St.Joseph, but for the work he does on the local and international level) Though I market my puppets/vent work I still have a bit of magic in my nearly normal programs. During the week days I cannot open the magic Café. The school has a block on this type of site. IBM the Business I assume not the brotherhood of magicians.(LOL) Hope to meet and jam with you and others in July. The IBM convention is July 3, 4 and 5, 2003. (I believe) check the International site. You can easily find it through a http://www.google.com search I won't be able to make the coinvention. Someday some year. Harris
