Wow.. $60 for blank cards with g***... that's not a replacement. This is pretty much how much the new trick costs.
Not fair in my opinion.... |

How many cards come in a pack that one can customize? 52 or less?

You get two decks of 52 cards in the replacement pack plus a book of ideas. So yankay37 you're getting more than you would be buying the trick again. I use the decks all the time and have bought a couple replacements over the past couple years. Definitely worth the money, if you're actually getting paid for gigs. Maybe not so much for a hobbyist. Just IMO.

$60 for a gaffed deck. I bought this. I would never let a spectator handle this deck during the routine. And toss them on the floor? I can do this routine with a 50 cent borrowed deck, much cleaner and get a different card every time I perform it!

I have performed this loads of times the spectators handle the deck through the whole routine and I've never had even the slightest problem. You cannot possibly duplicate this routine with a borrowed deck. |

I have also performed this trick numerous times, in front of paying audience, adults, and for kids as well. The handling of the deck by spectators is a no issue. There is no way really, if you give proper yet very basic instructions, that the spectator will mess with the deck or feel it is anything else than a normal deck of cards. I too felt 60$ is a little too much, but this is very comercial and I prefer spending 60$ on a real worker like this one than 15$ on a trick that I will not use (as I am sure we all have at one point or another).

I have recently acquired the Smart Ass deck and have not actually used it. I have seen a few performance video's where the spectator throws the cards straight up and having them fall in front of them. I think this could possibly expose something. Throwing behind the spectator or in a trash bin would be best in my opinion. Does anyone do this by letting them throw them straight up?

I usually just have some sort of box or "bucket" in front of them to drop piles of cards into. This makes clean-up much easier, and a better possibility to get all of the cards back. I have the Julia Roberts version, and have my music queued to "pretty woman" by Roy Orbison while the audience member walks back to her seat. However, I've wondered if this might be taking it too far. Perhaps it sends too strong a message that there wasn't a free choice. Thoughts?

I use this in my children's show for older children. I take with me an umbrella which is black on the outside, but bright rainbow colours on the inside. I lay the opened umbrella down on the floor and ask the helper to throw the cards into it. Clean up at the end of the trick is easy, I simply close the umbrella, and sort all the cards out after the show.
When I'm working this close up, I just ask the helper to choose which pack they would like (left hand or right hand), get them to hold and shuffle the packet they chose while I put the other packet away in the card box. I think Smart Ass is a real worker, very versatile, works just as well close up and stage, and for any age group except the really young. |

I like the umbrella idea, quick and easy cleanup. Great idea. Thanks

This is a very entertaining trick.. I don't believe however that most people think this is a fair selection.

I also think the music is a good idea. If you knew the actress in advance then you would also know the associated music. Another dimension to the trick.

I am aware of Smart Ass for a long time, but never looked into it as it seemed to be a stage trick. Reading through the thread it seems that Smart Ass also works for Close Up.
Is a kind of bag rally required ? Or could the spectator just hand you the cards (and your are putting them in your pocket). instead of throwing them away ? |

For me, I think it is written for the stage (as it really does play well on stage) with throwing the cards into the air, or throwing them into the basket, to give the effect more animation. I think the stage helps hide the secret a tad bit better, because you only have one spectator looking at the deck. Yes, I think you could do it close up and just put the cards into your pocket. As with any effect, with proper audience management, especially close up, the deck should not get too much heat. Thanks! |

I recently saw Bill perform this in a parlor show. The names of celebrities were written on long rectangular cards that look nothing like playing cards. I liked this touch. Now I’m wondering if he’s thinking about selling this configuration.
