I have been performing magic for about 6 years now, I have done birthday parties, close up and stage, and a few months ago I really got in to the idea of busking, and began working on routines that I thought would really play on the street.
There is a festival in my town on the 4th and 5th of july and I have already spoken to the athorities and got permission to set up. it is a music festival and as far as I know there has never been anyone there performing magic so I will be offering something new. So I would like to ask some of the seasoned and not so seasoned buskers for any advice they can give to a first time busker?? Thank you Jeremy |

I would read "the secret art of magic" and others. I learned very quickly that it's much easier to keep a crowd than get one. And that it's easier if you get your crowd before you start (otherwise, people will watch for a second then walk off)
I would find and watch some seasoned buskers of all stripes and watch their crowd control tactics. How they build a crowd, how they manage it and keep it looking like a crowd, and how they work the hat. I've gotta run, but I'll PM some points tomorrow. Good luck! Busking is definitely a different animal! |

Heya Jeremy,
If you're wanting to make money on the 4th...then do the show a few times in front of real people before that...and hat them. Performing for a crowd and getting money from them are 2 different skill sets. Anyway, hope you have a good time! |

Set up far away from the band unless you're doing a silent act.

Also if you are the first busker to work this spot, have a hat out at all times. this will help train your audance on what to do. with out this pre-warnig a hat line may scair them off.
Oh, and be sure it is a hat, Like the open music case it is simbolic, people understand what it is there for, hat line or no.

Well guys I took a few of my routines to my S.A.M. meeting last night, and they all gave me some awesome tips to imporove the routines and nit picked a few of them apart.
But hey if they can just nit pick atleast that means there were no major flaws. So I feel really encouraged since the meeting and I'm going to go hit the streets this saturday, ill be sure to let you all know how it goes. Jeremy |

Good luck man...
I need to get off my duff and get back out there. I had done a limited run at a local farmers market in Lancaster PA. Nothing to big and or to showy, I had my hat out but didn't pass it and still raked in some dough. Guess I need to get back on the horse too

Hey guys I went out yesterday and found a small town festival to work, it wat the moon pie and RC cola festival in belle buckle TN, yeah I had never heard of it either and I live in Tn.
But I got there and set up, and my first pull was a group of about 5 teenage girls and I got jaw dropping reactions from the sponge balls, and by the time I went in to my second trick the crowd had grown to about 20. Then by the time I was ready to do the cups and balls it was about 35-40 people, I got awesome reactions throught out the show. The show was a blast for me, so much fun. However I did notice that I need to work on developing a solid connection to the audience, and I need to come up with a better way to pull the crowd. the first crowd with the girls was easy but some of the other crowds were a bit harder to pull. I also need to develope some more lines to pull the whole show together as a unit, and of course I need to work on my hat lines. Tipping was really light, I did three shows in and hour and a half and made $23.04, but it wasnt about the money the experiance was the greatest and made my week, I know some of what I need to work on and the next time will be better!!! I took a friend with me to take pictures and I will load the up soon and post a link so you can all see. Jeremy |

Keep it up. There is much wisdom here on the Café and elsewehere to help you figure out how to get it all done. As you found out there is a nack for getting the hat. Best of luck.

Jeremy,
Those pictures look great! It looks like you are having a lot of fun! Your crowd control skills appear to be fantastic! I have NEVER seen somebody go out on the street for the first time and build an edge that perfect. Close enough to you to see everything, backed off enough so that you can work, nice even edge, good stacking, I'm really impressed! Learning how to ask for the money is tricky but it will come, be honest, be sincere, and most importantly BE FUNNY! You have to have a laugh in the hat pitch. Put a couple of hat lines earlier in your show to avoid the audience feeling sandbagged at the end when the hat comes out. Again, BE FUNNY! With that kind of crowd control you learn about asking for the money and you will be cranking out triple digit hats. Connecting more with your audience will also help that. Go get em!
