Honestly folks, find another prop.
The color change thing is very nice, BUT THE KNIFE PART IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE THESE DAYS. I'm not too comfortable condonning the use of knives anymore. Carrying them is not socially acceptable. Working with a box cutter is also going in the wrong direction.

Whit Hayden's "The Intricate Web of Distraction" is a very good routine. I suggest you also get Mogars Stag Knifes. These are the same as Whit uses and can be purchased either from Whit or directly from Magic Stars Studio of Magic. With the stag knifes you can tell which is which by feel.

the routines are good.
the prop really needs to be re-framed. Find some other thing like a comb and get set up. there is little reason to carry a knife these days. Memory sticks, combs... bout the same as cigarettes really, not cool to carry. like pommade, spats, canes, stove pipe hats and cellulose collars, the pocket knive is a bit passe. Even the swiss army knive is now a novelty. Yes, that might be cute to use a small swiss army type knife. Especially if you have it on your keychain.

I like the color changing knives. I do it all the time and never have any problems. I just saw Whit blow an audience away at the Magic Castle last week with the color changing knives.
There are lots of great routines out there. I would recommend Routined Manipulation (part two) by Lewis Ganson. Not only does Ganson give you a great routine, he has described a great many moves that you can use to creat your own routine. Regards, Brady |

I'd have to say that Daryl's routine is my favorite. His patter and presentation fits my style of magic and the ending to his version of this classic trick is very unique.
I also love Bill Malone's routine of the effect! |

Yeah, I once got stopped by airport security just after 9-11 for having the color changing knives. At that time, security protocols hadn't been hammered out yet, so it was a guess whether or not they'd let me through.
More importantly, I'd forgotten they were in my magic bag with all my gaffed coins. Needless to say, I had to check the whole thing in baggage. As for carrying knives being passe, I can see that. On the other hand, here in Oregon, a lot of people legally carry guns--although, I don't think most could handle a color changing guns routine--cool though that may sound.

Intricate web of distraction from Whit Haydn is the best!Of course you can change some moves or anything you do not like, to perform your own routine.
Don't wait for the perfect moment...Take a moment and make it perfect!!!

I really don't think that the color changing knives is anything bad, although I do admit cig. magic is not very socially acceptable, unless you always end with vanishing them and saying smoking is bad =)
Most color changing knives really don't look like they could hurt anyone, and you can easily find a backstory for why you carry them around(from grandpa, found them at Copperfieldsshow, ect). Personally, and i don't own one, but i think a color changing knive routine with a holdout would be the most impressive, just because you can get so many color changes and end clean... |

MacGyver,
it appears that you have seen the perfect hold out. The knives used in that routined are the very best there are. Those are knowed as the Tamariz knives although Tamariz is not the manufacturer. I've seen the York knives and they are not good whatsoever in my opinion. They are too fat, you can easely spot the color on the other side, and to meke things worst they have a metal plate in one of the sides and not on the other, which makes the color change no sense whatsoever. The ones used by Antonio Romero on the perfect hold out tape and the ones used by Tamariz and many spanish magicians can be found at the Stevens magic emporium site. As far to my knowledge he is the only importer. I will be selling them as well in 2 months from now. They are superflat, but at the same time they have enough curve to make the move easy to accomplish. On top of that most (not all) of the sets found in the US consists in 2 knives, while the Tamariz sets can have as many as 12 different combinations to make a great routine. Also they are completely simetric in shape, not thicker at one end and thiner at the other one. These are the knives to have. Routines can be found in the Ganson books as mentioned before. The perfect holod out is a great reference to see what can be acomplished with the cc knives. The book Sonata by Juan Tamariz has some moves and routines and be on the lookout for the World of knives bu Arturo de Ascanio, soon to be translated to English and the definitive instruction resource on knives. |

I kind of agree with the majority on this, the knives are not passe, they are logical to have and can be routined beautifully. It is probably one of the only props that serves a practical use as well.
A note on what Carlos said, I too own the York knives and value them more as a collector item than a performance item. They are beautifully made but I wouldn't perform with them. Mogars are nice, but a little thin when your finally old enough to develop arthritis. So now I only perform with the ten dollar locking knives. Amazing how easy they are to spin and most don't notice the different edge. York's routine is good, but useless if like me you no longer wear a watch. Go with Whit's or Juan's. |

Let's set this straight...the best color changing knives ever made are Jimmy Sanders' Color Changing Knives...Bar none! And I've owned all different kinds/makers/models. Unfortunately, they're also next to impossible to find these days, and cost around $300/3 knife set. I know, I have 2 sets. I've retired mine to the display case, and now use Mogar's Stag Handle set. The best routine is the one I use...heh heh heh. It's actually the routine I've seen a friend of mine use since I was a kid. How many people know Richard Oakley? Well..for those of you who do...it's his routine, just modified slightly. Not too long and boring, not too short and puzzle-like. The perfect routine for this ageless item.
