I have an idea for something and it'd need to be made out of whatever that stuff was that used to be sold to make the "creepy crawlers" for kids some years ago...at least something like it anyway!!??
It's pretty much like you'd find on some "worm look-alike" fishing lures. This would need to be some kind of liquid that'd be poured in a ultracal (plaster) mold. I've been messin around with mold making for about 40-some years (plaster molds and liquid latex, etc.) but wondering where I can find this stretchy, springy, and "worm like" (when it's dry anyway!!) material!!! Anybody know anything about where to find/get it?? Also be nice if it came in different colors so no painting would be needed...if you could find any paint that'd stick to that stuff!! THANKS!! |

Do a search for fishing. Lure making materials. I know many years back they sold kits.

I'd recommend "Dragon Skin" Silicone from http://www.Smooth-on.com When cured, it's got a Shore A hardness of 10...which means just a little harder than chewed gum.
It's easy to use (1-to-1 mix ratio) and should work well in a plaster mold...although I'd advise sealing it. The material is a milky white color when cured, so it tints easily. Many tints are available. Dan Wolfe, aka. "EARL" |

For the EXACT substance you are talking about...
Go get the creepy crawlers kit or the refils. Yes...They still make it- Got some for my son last X-mas. Toystores or online, it is out there, just as cool as ever (Except that they changed the little heater element to a lightbulb). Gwyd |

Thanks for all the good ideas!!!
Actually...I was at the local hardware store and think that silicon would work well for this also!!?? This is the kind you use to seal doors, tile, etc. and is squeezed out with a caulking gun. It "stays flexable for 50 years!" so no problem there!! Comes in different colors which is good as paint won't work on it. I'm thinking using vasoline or something spray in (that kitchen pan spray "Pam"???) the mold so the finished piece will easy to remove(??). Anybody ever use this stuff...and have any tips on it????????????? |

The material you're looking for is Hot Melt vinyl...
http://www.monstermakers.com/product/ela......elt.html It smells bad.. and is rather dangerous to work with.. but it can be colored with oil paint or universal tints (like they use for paint tinting)... it smells really bad. But it's exactly the marterial you're asking for. If you want that kind of stretch.. you won't get it out of silicone. One word of caution.. you can't paint it.. the color you color it is the color it is.. The main ingredient is similar to mineral oil.. and most everything it touches long erm will stain with an oily stain. |
