Does anyone have a rundown of which Derren Brown effects are actually learnable and which aren't? i.e. the ones by other people, as I assume he hasn't published any of his original material. In particular, the one where he gets the girl hypnotised and then somehow knows the name of the first guy she ever had a crush on? I'd love to be able to do this kind of stuff to people, it just seems so insane it can't be real.

Indeed I did. I've seen Derren's TV specials before but they've never seemed quite so impressive as this before. I don't really get what you're trying to say with your second post?

Check out "Royal Road to Card Magic". It's how Derren got started.

You wont be able to do what Derren does unless you are willing to put in YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS of work. If you are not interested in putting in that kind of time then you have your answer.

Excellent stuff as usual guys. I think mentalism is what of those things I'll never learn to actually do, but I'll always be massively impressed with the methods they use on people. Derren Brown is a machine.

Jonathan Ross seems to think that Derren accomplishes his tricks by coating his playing cards in honey. If that doesn't give you a clue to his methods, then I'm afraid I can't help you...

Is there any problem a newbie wanting to learn an effect made by an established performer?
There are better positive responses... I'm not establishing my opinion as the one to follow but I think we can help everyone with positive feedback. Like Nate (chichi) says: To be able to do it you really need to learn more about magic because it's not really a watch.learn&do type of effect. Everything he does are accomplished by one or more combinations of techniques to achieve the effect that you saw. The TV scenario is another thing... it's a controlled scenario so some of effects may not be like you saw. So if you are really interested I know you will find information to do mind blowing magic but as everything in life... you need to love what you do to progress and grow in what you choose doing. So begin to search books about mentalism because there's a lot of information to read and some are useful and some not but in the end the ones that were not useful could become really useful when you combine with other ones. So it's a matter of time, patience and effort. All the best |

Chris, If you're interested in performing mentalism, I'd say performance and presentation are the most important aspects of the art. You've watched Derren Brown, you know what I'm talking about. Method, many times, is extremely simple and direct. You'd be surprised.
I will warn you that you should tread carefully in the field, especially in this section of the Café. There are a few on here who will ridicule your questions and interest in Mentalism and attempt to push you away. Well I'm here to tell you that you too can have some fun with Mentalism, Magic, whatever. If you want to be a professional, yes, it'll take you years to perfect your art, if you want to have some fun, some careful dedicated time with your chosen (self-working or simple method) effect will be enough to entertain your sphere of influence. You live in Derby, so visit http://www.alakazam.co.uk and/or http://www.jbtv.co.uk and check out effects like Focal Point, Killer Elite Pro, Diceman, the DVD "Unexpected", A Word in a Million, Revelation Shirt, One For The Money, for instance. When you find something that speaks to you on some level, do a search here on the Café before asking any questions. You'll most likely find out what you need without being bullied and insulted for asking. I don't come around here much anymore, but feel free to PM or email me with any questions. A few others on here can be PMed for questions as well ... but you'll have to discover the "diamonds in the rough" for yourself. You're a musician and songwriter, I'm assuming you're a creative person, so once you find the effects you like and can relate to, work on performance and presentation, and as Tim Russert used to say "go get 'em!".

Pay attention to what Alexandre has said. Since your are a musician think about what you've asked and the kind of subtext that went with it in music terms: what if someone who had either never played a guitar or just strummed it a bit, came up to you after you had mastered some really long and hard solo piece and he said, "Hey, I'd like to learn that. I'm going to a party tomorrow and someone has a guitar there. I'd like to pick it up and do what you just did. Tell me how to do it."
I'm assuming you would give practically the same advice: start learning the basic notes... move onto chords... get comfortable with simple songs and then work from there. Same goes with mentalism. Buy 13 Steps, Annemann and some Osterlind DVDs. Work your way slowly through them. Learn from those that came before you. Start slow then you will start to pick up speed on learning things. Read, read, read... then read some more. Greg Greg

Greg Arce's music analogy was fantastic, as were a lot of the other posts. I'll look up/buy the stuff listed, and hopefully one day do something half as good as what Derren does. Thanks guys.

If you wanna play along with hendrix and break a few rules - you have to learn the basics first...
no E7 without an E, no blues without a couple of pentatonic scales... learn the backbone, then flesh it out yourself...pardon the bad pun.. and, to keep with the blues analogy, its often the notes you don't play more than the notes you do...think of that as like a musical zen koan...
