Balducci! If you are correct that songs make Neil a political activist then I must call the police! I was listening to Neil Young and discovered something, he killed a woman down by the river! Aughhh!

You tell me your definition of what a 'political activist' is if you like, just so we're on the same page as to what those words mean. All I know is he released an anti-war record, and gave interviews in which he denounced Bush and the war in Iraq. From http://arts.guardian.co.uk/features/story/0,,1805195,00.html : Living With War is indeed an angry record but one that manages to sound somehow patriotic, too. Young says he waited a long time to make it because he was hoping that 'maybe a younger artist would stand up and write these kinds of songs'. That never happened, or at least not in the high-profile way he thought it would. 'For a while, you know, I didn't feel it was my place. Being 60 years old, and being who I am, it just didn't feel appropriate,' he continues, getting into his stride. 'Plus, after 9/11, we were told by the government that expressing dissent was not patriotic. I mean, I trusted the government back then. I was one of those guys who thought the Patriot Act was an OK idea when it first came out. I got behind it.' He shakes his head at his own folly. What, I ask, changed his mind? 'Bush did. The government did. We need a leader who's more cautious, not so reckless with things they don't understand. Other cultures need to be respected. Culture itself needs to be respected. I mean, I feel Saddam was bad and had to be overthrown, but are we smart or are we stupid? At this point in our evolution, with all the technology that we have, there has to be a better way of doing this than bombing a country into oblivion.' In on-air interviews, he also called for the impeachment of Bush: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2006/04/21......560.html Listen around 2:40, though the entire interview is good.

As silly as I find this discussion, I will point out that there is a very small difference between standing on a podium making political speeches and standing on a stage singing them.

Hey, he's one of my 72 heroes, and I don't really have the slightest idea about his politics. Nor do I care. But he wrote these words:
The woman I'm thinking of, she loved me all up But I'm so down today She's so fine, she's in my mind. I hear her callin'. See the lonely boy, out on the weekend Trying to make it pay. Can't relate to joy, he tries to speak and Can't begin to say. He could be a communist or a fascist or a Democrat or whatever. I don't care. I worship Neil Young. |

Google 'neil young political activist' and you come up with over a million hits. So it seems apparent that an awful lot of people, rightly or wrongly, describe him that way.
Neil Young's own website proudly includes a reprint of at least one article that calls him a 'political activist': http://www.neilyoung.com/news/index.html None of this necessarily means or changes anything, I'm just saying. Everybody have a nice day. :)

No.
Not live, that is. I've seen this movie a couple of times: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473692/ On the other hand, I've never seen God, either. Worship doesn't require actually seeing the burning bush. Or does it? |

A million people can still be wrong. Martin Sheen, political activist, Neil Young, Folk/Rock writer and performer. I will say he is socially concious but sorry, I don't think he will show up at any rally's you'll be at with his copy of Mao's lil' Red Book in one hand and Forbes in the other. Young, and his cohorts in CSN, are old hippies doing their "anti war, anti establishment, anti Bush, anti commercialism, anti capitalism, anti everything else" BS and while misfits gobble it up as gospel and discuss "how business are profiteering and making money off us rather than spreading the truth like ol' Neil and the guys" while clutching his $125 ticket in one hand, his $8.00 beer in the other as he waits to buy his T Shirt for $60.00. Great talents but don't waste your time trying to convince me these guys are living in huts while giving all their money to feed starving children. I know the area Neil Young lives in and it ain't small houses with "We Support Whales" signs in the front yards.

I didn't realise that political activists had to be poor, live in huts, read Mao, like whales, feed orphans, etc. My bad.

Yes they do....they may also live above garages. The simple fact is he has a stage image you think is reality. I'm telling you that in all the years I lived in the bay area I never once saw any reference to him doing anything political at all, he didn't even changes his citizenship so he could take part in effecting change, some political activist....

On the lake,
the deep forbidden lake, The old boats go gliding by, And the leaves are falling from the trees And landing on the logs and I See the turtles heading for the bog And falling off the log. They make the water splash, And feeling no backlash, They climb the happy banks. I like turtles, so Neil gets a vote from me for this one. |

Gaddy, if you read the post I comment on his social awareness as it concerns the school he started because his child had conditions (what is the politcally correct term?). I've supported the Bridge School since it started and continue to do so and its existance nor Youngs amazing devotion and support of it does not meet my definition of 'political activism'.
If you or Balducci want to claim that The Bridge Foundation is an offshoot of some socialist or left wing political action group then I'll withdraw my financial and other support for them immediately and tell them why I'm doing so. |

Is political activism defined as "socialist or left wing political action group"? Or are you simply being a PITA again?
