Hello,
When I see a user post I tend to look at their web site that is listed under their little picture on the left of the screen. I see that it seems that many magicians do magic for companies. This seems like a really cool gig as I usually picture illusionists developing a show and selling tickets. Is this done for the entertainment of the employees, or maybe to reveal new products? I never thought about magicians helping companies in this way and it seems cool. What exactly do the companies like the magicians to do in these situations and for what reason do they have the magician do them? How does a magician get a job like this? Cold Calling? I can realize if you have established yourself with a few companies but when you have not yet how do you get this type of job. I would love to see the company I work for hire a magician for our Sales Kickoff but I would need to give a good case to my District manager as to why it would be a good idea, Thanks, Chris
Thanks,

Hi Chris,
Corporate Magic is a very specialized, difficult, and competitive field. A company might hire an entertainer to bring more traffic into their convention booth, or reward clients at a reception, or motivate their salesforce, or assist with training topics, or make a holiday party special, at least those are a few categories. If someone wants to get into corporate work, they’d better have one heck of a slick, smooth, original, professional product to offer, and have the capacity to understand and script custom content, then tie it into appropriate effects, polish and perform this all under the gun. Your marketing materials must also be top-notch and complete, many clients demand an un-edited video of a live show to guarantee you can deliver what your promo says. Your material and your look must also be businesslike, and first class. I won’t go into the headaches of corporate travel, getting your equipment loaded and set-up in hotels, convention centers, and corporate headquarters, or the politics of working in that environment. This may be a tempting field, but from reading your various posts you are probably a long way from entering this particular arena, and nothing turns off a company to entertainment faster than someone who is less than prepared wasting their time and money, it can ruin future gigs for many other professionals. There are very few performers I’ve encountered over the years who are experts at this, who continue to be booked and re-booked, and who know the ins-and-outs of the business world well enough to navigate a career within the corporate environment. My thoughts, Walt |

I must agree with Walt. I have been specializing in corporate entertainment for around 7 years now, and the hardest thing to combat is corporations who have hired a magician that did not specialize in corporate magic, and were very disappointed. It makes it extremely difficult to convince a company to have magic at their event. They usually reply, "We've done that before- it did not go over well..."
Repeat clients are your bread and butter, getting a one time gig can be detrimental to many of the other magicians in your area, not just you. I am not trying to sound negative or attacking in any way- just want to make it clear that only polished, A material, that has been performed for adults several times should be presented at corporate gigs. The same thing goes for birthday party magicians and the other sub specialties of our art. Most of us do a few different types of magic to survive (stage, corporate, sleight of hand, etc.), but performing for birthday parties is demanding, requires crowd control techniques, and a special talent for performing for kids. I personally think kid shows are harder for ME than the corporate events! My three cents... |
