Hi Chesaday,
do you say that the names should not have been publicly released or do you say that a creator should not exclude a people he does not like (for whatever reason) from purchasing his illusion ? Just to avoid misundrstanding. Dixie |

Oh, Dixie .. you're mixing things up. I don't know exactly who "Sawuin2" is .. he/she had the info posted above. That's all that was about .. the profile on the Café has no real information about the member.
On the topic of who can or can't buy an illusion .. well, I just think that's stupid. If they are willing to pay your price ... I consider it sold. That's ridiculous to think you can restrict someone from purchasing something up on a public auction. This is America last time I checked .. Steve |

They seem to have made a typo though.
"Buyer must sign a agreement not to expose the secret of this illusion or use this prop or let it be exposed on TV. " You can't use it?

That's ridiculous to think you can restrict someone from purchasing something up on a public auction. Even ebay allows a seller to restrict bids from any buyer, and don't forget most business still have a sign saying "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone". The point here is the creater has the right to protect his creation, If he chooses to protect it by restricting sales to some people so be it. I agree Terry may have been a target unfairly but Valantino's name should have stayed up on the site. In fact if sales were controlled better some of the knock off illusions may not exist.

I think we can agree that the point here is not whthera creator has the right to protect his or her creation. Of course they do. The point really was more a matter of someone being falsely accused of something they never did or being blacklisted out of pure jealousy. Just my opinion on it.

Hi Guys
I am so sorry about the problems with the ad on Magic auction it was never my intent to cause a problem. I had sent the ad in with the clause that it couldn't be sold to Valentino or Terry Evenswood or exposed on TV in any way. I really didn't expect them to put that in the ad I thought that they would let a buyer know when they put in a bid that there was a agreement that had to be signed. I should have talked to Christine more about it before it ran but I was knee deep in a project at the time and didn't think it out enough. I think Terry is a excellent performer and while I wont ever step foot in his theater again I wish him the best and feel that there is plenty of room for more than 1 magic show here. I know that the reason for valentino and exposure on TV is pretty self evident but with Evenswood it was more personal I have had a number of problems with Terry and his TJ over the years at first I didn't believe them as Terry seemed like such a nice guy and I had taken him to lunch twice and offered to help him fix up or loan him some of my illusions when he first got here as his were in pretty bad shape(By the way I was here about 6 years before Terry ever got here and was pretty much established with my own show produced by John Stewert of legends in concert and later in variety shows here so I never was intruding on Terry's territory) Anyway I wont go into details but it soon became evident that what I was hearing was true and only escalated over the next 10 years.Needless to say I no longer want to do business with Terry or associate with him in any way or have him own any of my illusions. I have sent a number of people to his shows over the years despite my feelings toward him as I feel that it was promoting magic in general. I knew when listing the illusion that I would be at the mercy of the auction and that anyone could get it and do what they want with it which is why I added the clause I saw the post that said that they had never heard of me which is not surprising as a lot of my bigger projects have been as a consultant both here and Internationally. I was Copperfield's Illusion manager, Pyro & Special effects guy and consultant to his show for about 6 years and have done the Grammy , Soul Train and MTV Music Awards, Projects for Disney , Movies , TV , Amusement Parks and Rock Concerts among other things. I only mention this because it sounded like it was sour Grapes about the theater (there is a whole other story there)and that I was some pathetic loser in some of the posts. In truth I try to help as many magicians as I can & I do a free Gospel ministry & the schools for free as well. Anyway again I am sorry for the problem I don't want the post to sway you in any way about Evenswood or Valentino these are my views and feelings about the two and speaking of Valentino. All of you that are friends on MySpace have probably seen my Bulletins about the repackaging and airing of the Masked Magician Specials on MyNetwork TV (Sinclair Broadcasting) I think these specials are the worst thing to happen to magic ever and I have fought them over the years. I have already contacted SinClair to air my opinion but please feel free to see my Bulletins on MySpace or contact me and I will be happy to give you their contact information. All the best on all your projects guys Mike Keating |

Thanks for stopping in and posting your side of things. How are things going for you since CelebraCadabra? How did come to find and approach you about illusion rental? Seems like there would have been people closer that they could have used. Chris |

Hi Chris
I was very lucky . I guess they checked around and my name kept popping up as the go to guy. I started by just getting some calls from some of the coaches then they wanted to use a illusion that I already had in LA and that kind of balooned into about 16 cases of illusions from here. I have about apx. $300,000 in illusions (mostly bought for the show that would become Terry Evenswoods show ...Even the name Magic Beyond Belief was the name I called my show its on all my cargo trailors as big graphics...Again I know that sounds like sour grapes but it really isn't. That was a problem I have with the producers not Terry, as They had promased me my own show for about 10 years while I litterally built thier other shows I designed and built the sets, props, illusions etc. while taking a part in thier productions.I know IM a idiot I just made the mistake of trusting them old show biz tale...Get it in writing even with good friends Anyway the illusions are scattered around the country and in Maylasia right now. Taking all those illusions to Vegas was a lot of work but I can't say enough nice about the people and the production. Although I think I probably drove the producers crazy trying to hide the secrets which I really didn't need to do as Chris Martin the producer is a magician and they were really carefull not to expose anything as well.It was great and I would do the show again in a heart beat |

Well isn't magic just one of the most interesting industries in the world Everyone has a view on who is good and who is bad and what is right and what is wrong. I can't say that I know Terry at all and would not say anything bad about someone I don't know.
I can however say that not only do I know Michael Keating but I have worked with him, used one of his illusions in my show and have had him come out and take a show that was lacking and turn it into something that people have really enjoyed. Mike is a super human being and one of the most genuine and honest men I have ever met in this business. When you are just starting out and your launching a world tour you will find your list of Magic friends dwindle, do to our competitive nature. Not his! He could care less if he is getting the glory as long as your happy with the work he has done or the prop you have bought or rented. So as far as saying he is jealous of anyone would be an inaccurate and very false statement. Mike was hurt deeply by a person he called friend as I am sure a lot of us have been in this industry. Lesson here is simple align yourself with people who care about magic as a whole and about you as a person. Mike is one of those people and I am honored and privileged to know him and be able to call him friend. It is his Illusion and his right to sell to who he wants. An irresponsible seller would just care about getting the money. He is not money hungry, he cares about this industry and all of our success in it by having magic kept secret as it should be. Cheers to you my friend and I hope some of these folks will take the time to get to know you. Shawn Anthony |

I would have to totally agreewith Shawn Anthony, I will not speak against Terry, but I will always speak for Michael. He took me under his wing when I was only 16 and not that great. He has given and loaned me numerous props. He has spent countless hours giving me advice on construction of new props as well as ways to better make my show flow. He has never done anything to me that could be considered bad in any way. Michael is not just a great person, but an amazing person. The only flaw he may has is he cares about others too much, and I think we could all use more flaws like that. Thank you Mike for everythin!

Well I'll chime in here having spoken with both Michael and Terry. First, my friend Terry: I first met Terry when he went to Pigeon Forge years ago with the old show at the Eagle Mountain theatre. I've followed his career ever since and EVERY TIME I've visited, he has absolutely been the nicest individual you could imagine. On my first visit long ago, upon finding out that I was a magician, Terry immediately asked if there was anything he could offer advice on. I mentioned that I had been playing with card manipulations at the time and Terry asked if there were any moves I wanted to learn (and remember, I had only known him for about 4 minutes). He then showed me the interlocked card production and gave me a deck of Lance Burton manipulation cards! Not too many magicians you can say that about! Over the years, Terry has shown me his amazing magic collection up close, he's kindly offered handling tips on various illusions, and has never once been anything other than a great human being. No, I don't work for Terry, I just can't possibly imagine that anyone could ever have anything bad to say about him. I'll gladly say that he's one of the greats, both on and off stage.
As For Michael- in all fairness, I've only met him twice. But oh, did he pack a lot into those two visits! We spoke on two seperate occasions as he was working the magic souvenir counter at the Comedy Barn show. On both occasions, he was extremely negative. I told him that I had been over at Terry's show and at the mere mention of Terry's name, Michael launched into a TIRADE. He told me how bad Terry's show was, how Terry was "hanging on by a wing and a prayer", as well as making several unfounded attacks on Terry's character (and personal life). This happened both times I met Michael and all I had to do was mention Terry's name. Oddly enough, when I mentioned to Terry that I had met this negative guy named Micheal Keating, Terry STILL remained a professional and didn't say anything. Think about that- it's a situation that anyone could have easily run with, but not Terry. Unlike Terry, when I told Michael I was a magician, Michael didn't ask if there was anything he could help with. Instead, Michael made sure that I knew that he was with Copperfield for a long time, that he'd worked Vegas, that he was a "big name" in the magic world, etc. He reached back on the sales shelf and grabbed a folder containing his expensive promo material and made sure that I'd remember who he was. I just remember walking away with the impression that I'd met someone who was screaming to be noticed but had done nothing but tear someone else down. Again, I've only met Michael twice, so to be fair, take that for what it's worth. I don't want to sound like I too am trying to tear someone down. I'm simply relaying my experiences and am only doing so because I hear that someone is saying bad things about Terry Evanswood. I've met Terry many times and have only good things to say about him. It's theoretically possibe that Michael was having a bad day on both of the occasions that I met him. However, I do believe that the proof is in the pudding and I was not at all surprised when when I heard that Terry got his own theater in Pigeon Forge. He deserves it and should have gotten it sooner. Phil |

Thanks for the nice comments about Terry .. you're right on the money about him. I've known Terry for over twenty years now. We both grew up in the same area outside of Chicago. We were both competing for the same shows but, it was always a friendly competition. It never got nasty .. never. We've both been through plenty and we always will be very close.
He's truly one of the best performers working today. Not better than me of course .. but, pretty good. Steve P.S. I do have to keep him in place .. I wouldn't want it to get to his head. |

Last I checked, the Mid Air Safe Mystery is still sitting on the Auction a month or two later. It's actually kind of ironic it hasn't sold .. maybe it will teach a certain someone a lesson.

I don't think it's very fair to say the illusion hasn't sold as a result of the questionable disclaimer that used to be in the illusion description -- as there are many, many (infact, the vast majority) illusions that sit on Magic Auction a very long time -- more than a month -- before their sold, if they even sell at all.
I don't know Terry, so I can't say anything about him. Don't get me wrong, I've tried to contact him several times with no real agenda -- just to introduce myself, say hello, etc -- but with no response. But, it does look like he does good work. He's consistently working, so that means something....the proof is in the pudding. Also, I can't say anything bad about Keating. Although I don't know him really personally, we're acquaintances and we've talked several, several times. He seems to be a really nice, genuine guy -- and really helpful...always offering to help in anyway he can. That's about all I can say! |

Little Brian, you have to consider that not all people are accessible at all times. Some performers actually have a real gig and perform everyday. Unlike most of us here on the Café with more time on our hand then we know what to do with.
I've got to run .. now where did I put my "Burger King" name tag?? Steve |

Oh Big Steve,
I'm thoroughly aware of the fact that "not all people are accessible at all times." I never said they did. All I said was that I attempted to contact him a couple times without him returning my correspondence. I wasn't saying anything bad about him, I'm appologize if you somehow interpreted it that way. BTW, what makes you think you can call me "Little Brian?" Do you know how insulting that is? I'm not sure if you're aware of it or not, but I'm a full time performer earning my income by magic alone. That's how I've made all my money since I was twelve years old. I don't have a lot of time on my hands, as you're implying. In fact, I have very little...not nearly enough to sit around and make 790+ posts. I work about 12 hours a day. I'm not sure what makes you think you're authorized (by using that word, I know I'm speaking your language) to be so condescending and make such rude remarks -- although I've noticed it's not uncharacteristic of you. I guess anyone can justify anything if they try hard enough. I know I'm coming off as an a*,* and I don't want to, but I'm tired of reading all your nasty posts -- and I know there are plenty others who share my opinion. Even if I didn't have a "real gig"....so what? What's wrong with hobbyists or enthusiasts? BTW, just as an FYI, I'm about a day or two away from closing a deal w/ a theme park where, in three and a half months, I'll be making more money than you probably make in a year or two. Again, I'm sorry for being so hot headed and coming off nasty, but all I was saying in my original post is that I can't say anything about Terry as we're not acquainted, despite my repeated efforts, but I can say that Mike seems to be a pretty nice guy very willing to help. I guess your post just really rubbed me the wrong way and left a bad taste in my mouth. I guess my bottom line is this: it's probably advisable to step off your pedestal and get your sh!t straight before you go shooting your mouth off regarding what you know nothing about. Man...I hate to be like this.... B |

I know Terry well, and I have met Michael a few times. He came to the Winter Carnival of Magic a few years ago and asked me to comp him for the convention. He was working for Fee/Hedrick in the Black Bear Jamboree show. He was playing the character "Dexter", a nerdy type. Michael did have a show around here for years, and worked at several others.
What I don't understand is WHY Michael would excluded Terry from purchasing this illusion. I understand that he CAN, but WHY would he want to do that? Terry is one of the magicians that I hold in the highest regard. I have never heard him speak badly of anyone...ever. He is truly that classiest performer that I have ever met. Michael, on the other hand seemed nice, but he also read me the riot act about Terry, and also presented his verbal resume to me. Scott
