Has anybody ever used his " act" to pay for his travel.

What I mean exactly is, get to a place and somehow manage to get booked within a week for a one show....

that would be a great way to travel....

Any tips???

I traveled to Jamaica about ten years ago, performed at the resort guest talent show, and got booked for two shows that paid for the trip. I'd say look for opportunities to perform in front of folks who may hire you.

Your easiest bet would be a percentage deal in a bar. Charge a cover, you can take anywhere between 50% to 100%, depending on your confidence.

You'll have to do a fair amount of promotion, but I've succeeded by shipping them a box of posters and table tents, and phone calls/e-mails to get it in local papers for free (entertainment listings).

I just booked a show in a vacation spot I'm heading to in a few weeks. My total printing expense turned out to be $12.00. Again, I'm assuming some risk for it being a percentage deal, but if anything I've turned a short vacation into a business trip, just for one hour's work.

There was an illusionist who was actually a full-time insurance salesman who did this all the time. When he wanted to go to FISM, he booked a cruise by booking his act. He also booked his lodging by performing in the hotel lounge or bar.

He had really great publicity material, but his show really sucked.

It was a very clever way to book a show, but the people he knocked out of work found it somewhat tedious, because they had to find work for the time this guy was taking their job.

So, if you do this, prepare for some strong negative feedback amongst people who don't approve of this kind of thing.

Basically, just be careful that you don't put someone else out of work. It can come back to haunt you bigtime.

Some places proposed to me this kind of deal... You do two shows in the week and you get one week of "vacation" in Tunisia, one in Morocco and one week in Egypt for "free" ! I always refused and I'm glad ! For me, this kind of deal is a disrespectful for the art and artists. I'm sad to see lot of "magicians" accept this kind of thing. I agree with Bill : When you accept that, you put the professionnal out of work. More and more often now, some amateur works like that on the cruise... and less professionnal artists can get job. It was my case. I worked on the cruise for few years. Unfortunatly, the company found some "artists" for free. Now the result is, like many friends in the buisness, I don't work anymore for the cruise company. Sadder still : Very often, the quality of this kind of "magicians" are bad.
I can't understand this kind of people who doesn't have this deontology. They are killing the buisness. When I see this guys, I feel to use my voodoo doll, for sure !

I seem to remember there being a magician or mentalist who recently travelled across Ireland for free - can anyone tell me who this was?

Travelled across Ireland for free? Hmmm ... you can do that in about three hours in a car.

This is not meant as an Ugly American put-down; it's just that I *have* driven across Ireland in about three hours, so I'm not sure what the big deal is (?).

Tom, Rory - The guy was Pete Carrol a member on here, I don't think the plan was just Ireland though.

lol not sure where you went I live in County Cork..It would take me almost three hours to Drive from north Cork to Castletownbere in West Cork which are in the same County....To drive 3 hours across Ireland..wow you must have been going really fast Smile

Im just one week back from my travels which took me across Ireland, southport, liverpool and Barcelona Smile I clocked over 180 performances Smile Savage experience though to be fair I should point out I have no kids, wife and I don't own a home(no payments must be kept up) so had no responsibilities so it was easy for me to go walkabouts Smile Got lots of publicity..this weekend coming I have gig at a comedy club which will hve 2 TV executives in the audience...So it has gotten interest in media etc but so have other things I've done such as headline prediction last year and my recent success at a big gig on comedy circuit.Savage experience..still catching up on sleep Smile helluva time Smile

Yeah, I had a car like that once, too, but I got rid of it!

In 1984, my father and I drove from Ennis (Clare) to Dublin in just about 3 hours.

Sliante!

I was in Ireland recently. One of my favourite places in the world. I did find however, that the driving times given by the people we stayed with in B&B's turned out to be less than accurate. They told us about 2-3 hours for trips that ended up taking near on 6! Oh well, we got to see a fair bit of the country. If you've not been, you absolutely must go. It's a fantastic country!
