So I've been working on the center-deal and I'm wondering what are some of the best applications for the deal once I have it down?
Thanks.

Showing it off to other magicians. They'll hate you!

My point was, there aren't many effects with it, because VERY few people can do it. A book on tricks with the center deal wouldn't sell very many copies. And since a layman wouldn't know that's what you were doing, it wouldn't make any difference to him. So the only thing that I would consider it good for would be to show it to other magicians, or possibly in a gambling demonstaration.

You're right of course....I was just thinking there might be some effect out there where someone had said " If only I could center deal now this would be WOW !"
Thanks.

I wish there was, because I've been working on a center deal for quite some time, but I just do it for fun. It's so much easier to get a card from the top or bottom of the deck, that a center deal is fairly pointless. I just do mine for magicians.

That is the only place I have seen it.
A friend (Buck from Illusions Magic in Cleveland) just blew me away with it one day. I was just amazed! He picked up a deck and just started dealing cards to the top of the counter. I was focused on the deck and his hands. He did a number of handlings and explained them, then he said, "how about this?" and he just starting to deal cards from all over in the deck. He was so smooth that in order to make his point without saying "look at this center deal", that when he stop amuzing himself, and could see that I didn't have a clue as to the wonder of what he was doing, he took the top couple of cards and flipped them face up, face up on the deck and then still dealt cards from the middle face down just as if they came right off the top. every once in awhile he would fan the face up cards to show they hadn't changed and he continued dealing out from the middle. I was just standing there shaking my head. It made me instantly want to start learning and practicing, but I realized that my audience would never appreciate it. And I agree with Scott. I can get a card pretty much to where I want on top or the bottom, so although I would love to learn it, and I really admire those of you who can do it. For me (and I suspect - for most others) the time would probably be better invested in other effects. Maybe you do an "expose" routine that shows how amazed your magician friends are when they think you are dealing off the top and the top card never changes. Or maybe not... BroDavid

The legend of the center deal is that it was a card sharp move to deal cards from the center of the deck after the deck was given a fare cut. This would be a real advantage because there would be no need for the shifting the cut.
In the book the magic and methods of Ross Bertram he writes about Vernon Meeting Alan Kennedy and how Alan beat all the top cheats of his day with the center deal. Ross Bertram explains the center deal in this book and took pictures of Vernon for the pictures used in the explanation of the move. In magic there has always been a debate if anyone really moved with the center deal in a real game. The debate goes on but I find the center deal a useful move and use it in a routine with my MB punch shuffle in a card shark demonstration. The center deal is also explained in the book seconds centers and bottoms by Ed Marlo. A book well worth reading if you are into false deals.

Check out the work of Martin Nash. He's got some great center dealing routines.

I might be wrong but if you are talking about the routines on the Nash L and L video tapes it is a pseudo center deal - not a real center like it is written up in the Ross Bertram book the magic and the methods of Ross Bertram.
I found on the Nash tapes the center routine interesting and a nice magic routine but I would not consider it the real work as far as center dealing goes. I have video of me doing centers at my web site - taped a long time ago. I hope this helps.

Martin usually used a genuine center. The mock centers were often substituted in for the video content.
Either way, the routines are SOLID and can be performed with or without a REAL center. It's all about making it entertaining and I feel that the Nash tapes are a great source for this.

There are one or two card mysteries that utilise the center deal. Most however seem to be gambling related. Mike Sorenson has an excellent ebook entitled Nash-Reloaded. I believe it can be purchased from library.com. There are at least two effects using the center deal, 'Any Ace Called For-Revisited' and a particular favorite of mine 'The Mechanic'. It enables you to use Andrew Wimhursts stud center from half the packet which makes life somewhat easier. Both are very powerful. And speaking of Andrew, its well worth getting his book 'Down Under Deals' for the full description of his center deal which is only covered superficially in his Card Artistry video. He also explains his Greek deal that I now use exclusively. The best center deal gambling demo from Andrew's work is, I think his Wimhurst Poker Deal. A great effect combining a simple almost self working idea with a knucklebusting show of center dealing for a great twist at the end. Also, his 'Return of the Ultimate CardShark' is worth a look. If you can get it, Gene Maze and the Art of Bottom Dealing has a chapter of four routines devoted to the center deal and all are well worth the effort. Hope this helps.

I would recommend reading "The Magician and ther Card Sharp" for a neat historical story on the center deal. I will warn you all however, IMHO the writing was as dry as toast.

I prefer the fake center I deal I perform, based on Ortiz's "Face up Centers," only I deal five hands, and I don't use faros at all in the routine.
In my opinion, for laymen it is more impressive looking than an actual center deal. That's just me. |

In magic there has always been a debate if anyone really moved with the center deal in a real game. The debate goes on... Well the debate should be over with because I have moved in a game with a Center Deal the one that ya'll see in my video. I don't see what's so amazing about a middle deal. If you can do a bottom deal in a game why not a middle? To me the middle is more easier to excute than the bottom deal. I don't have to shift the deck back in order to keep the cards at the bottom. Wow just talking about this made me realize why I stopped trying to do the Greek Deal because I didn't have to restore the cut if I learned the middle deal. I knew there was a reason for me to stop learning my Greek Deal but it's been so long now that I never think about it unless I'm asked about my middle. To the Reader your middle deal doesn't have to be perfect it just have to look natural. The reason why I stopped practicing my middle deal was because after winning hand after hand the people would just pick up the deck and shuffle it and would mess up my group cards and I had to use an alternative the Punch Deal.
