this is the "transposing candle" module of a larger unfinished candle routine. please excuse the very extremely poor video quality. please be honest . . . but don't senselessly be a hater. |

Not too bad, but it is pretty obvious that the candles are collapsing and not vanishing. Watch Lance Burton do his candles and learn from him.

What ideas or themes do you want to present to your audience?

Dpe666, ive actually piked lance Burtons routine apart and its all about the use of flash paper as misdirection. however, I'm not in the habit of being a copy cat so I'll just have to work on my own way of getting peoples eyes off my hands.
jonathan, I want to present my audience with the idea that theyre being tricked. but for real, I simply want to create an aura of mystery with kind of a gothic overtone. thanks for the feedback guys. |

Not bad at all, only problem is you asked people in the magic field to critique you and they of course know what is happening. I think to a layperson it will be great.

The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

I would try to avoid 'following' the candle with the silk as it disappears. I think it looks a lot cleaner if you just hold it taught a split second longer than it takes for the candle to disappear.
One thing with disappearing and reappearing candles is that they are lit when they vanish and not lit when they reappear. If it was magic they would have reappeared lit. I don't even know if it's possible I must admit (but I would be surprised if it's not). I only have one old appearing candle and it's definitely not possible with that one but the world should have come a long way since I bought it. If you plan on making this a routine that stands on it's own it need some work to be interesting like more convincing vanishes, better misdirection (to get the attention away from the hand from which the candle disappeared) and maybe a flourish or two to make you seem more comfortable handling the candles. Mostly subtleties really. A good start though... |

Okay. thanks to everyone for the input (except harv). tina I, thank you especially for being specific.
I came up with a new vanish move that's a little less tell-tale. as for the lit-unlit discrepancy, I'll just blow the candle out as part of the vanish move rather than get an appearing lit candle (i'm not a fan of that gimmick). I also found another little surprise I can fit into the routine. so I'll be shooting version 2 this week and I'll post a link as soon as its up. |
