I may well have missed talk of it on here, I know there's a general review of it in the Latest and greatest. Anyway - I wanted to mention this effect, as I had a little gig very recently and performed this for the first time to a real life human being. Now, I don't do walk around/strolling/stage work, I just do close-up, and I usually appear when people have cracked open the wine after a meal...so... I used this - and adding my own touch, I lit two candles and had the main lights switched off. I had 8 people around me, we discussed how we have all just felt something about strangers, just by the look of their faces we sometimes make massive assumptions about that person - whether we like or dislike them..that kind of thing. We can sometimes pick up on things, just by looking at people. Now, the guy who hired me was an ex-navy guy and I used him for the effect, I just told him to look at each photo, and any of those faces gave him some kind of thought or sensation..then he was to separate them from the rest... Anyway, those candles..they were scented...(sea breeze)... When he'd finished I then mentioned that he'd been handling photos of people who had been on the Titanic...and ran through a couple from the discarded pile. It was at that point, those candles kicked in a little, and he was looking at me strangely and saying "I really have no idea how, but I can really smell the sea now you've started to talk about all this..." Everyone started to agree... Then when I revealed (I feel revealing the dead group first is best to end on a positive) the dead everything went silent...and just by sheer luck one of the candles fizzled...which brought a couple of expletives out and nervous laughter... and then the ones who survived...the guy laughed and smiled, and he said "that's so strange...it's brought a tear to my eye if I'm honest..." and he had a couple of dewy eyes when I looked... I left it all there for 10 minutes and let everyone have a drink - I did in fact finish on a fun piece of psychometry to leave on a fun note and it was getting late...but as I was leaving the guy told me that he's usually quite a stiff upper lipped sort, and wouldn't of dared shed a tear normally, but he said he was glad he did, and it just brought back fond memories of all his old navy friends - they all meet up every 3 months for drinks and a chat...he said he can't wait to tell them about what we did. Anyway, thought I'd share something I found a little touching, and also to say that I think White Star is a great bit of business...very clean, good quality photos and the best bit for me is that it's all very hands off for you performing it. You do, in fact, get a few other handlings with this, some for playing cards, and no doubt you can easily adapt this, for a multitude of other dressings. I was also very pleased that the sea breeze candles worked out too. Thanks for reading, just thought I'd share...

Sea Breeze candles, eh? Nice touch!
I've stocked up a lot of reproductions of menus and tickets and other things from the old ship. Even went so far as to consider buying a real piece of coal from the ship, but decided against it as noone in the end of the spectators would know if it was a real piece or not. (and that would include myself....)

Nice story Abraxus. Good use of scented candles.

The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.

Turning a trick, that could have been over in 1 minute... in to a performance piece that those guests will talk about for years to come. Thanks for sharing your story Abraxus... and nice use of the scented candles |

Cheers all - you can get sea breeze scented joss sticks too if the place you perform will allow...
you could easily go out and out bizarre with this presentation too, a captain's whistle, and a ships bell...finish it all off by having it ring at the end...but that's not really me these days... I thought originally that the photos might look a bit cut 'n paste, but they've done a marvellous job with them...

As it doesn't use mr. curry's method, there's a lot to be said for it...no replacements, and it credits/influences/cites derren brown and paul curry regardless..and doesn't use either of those people's techniques...
I think it's a strong piece of work...last time I checked that shop's site, it had richard osterlind's unseen forces quite cheap too (for the uk it's usuall 60 quid, half price when I ordered mine)... I think it's important to end on a positive note, so I will be always finishing on the survived ones...and next time, as I just lucked out with the ex-navy guy, I will be getting them to visualise a scene (as the backs of each photo also explain how each person met their maker or survived) I think that'll give some beef to the bones as well as make a stronger presentation...

But if someone isn't sharp enough to figure out that the scented candle inches in front of their face might be responsible for what they're smelling, then I don't know if they're the best gauge for determining how effective this trick is. |

I dunno - personally, if someone had lit a candle and I was caught up in doing something a little odd and excited, I dunno how straight I would think or wonder whether a candle someone has just lit may be scented...
but hey - no problem!

Heck, if Abraxus vouches for this effect, I'm sold on it. I was waiting for someone like him to give it the tentacles up sign....!
Thanks!

I'm pretty scatterbrained but I can't imagine not being able to discern a scent was arising from a candle if I'm close enough to be using that candle to read by. But maybe scented candles aren't as ubiquitous in England as they are in America. Here it can be hard to find non-scented candles. Well, regardless, I appreciated the story. |

I just thought the smell of them would help invoke the imagery and story..i certainly don't expect people to always think I've dabbled with their ability to smell all the time...but we gotta ride our luck when these little things happen haven't we...
strong effect, historically wrapped, good quality props...

Yesterday I bought a very old style fountain pen for £1 from a local Antique Shop and today I have won a 1912 George V silver threepence coin on ebay for 99p. I can't wait to add these to the quality props which come with this terrific effect.
