I developed my persona in the Fall and now it's crazy hot. I have adjusted some things for the heat, but I'm finding I need to adjust more drastically. Does everyone change there persona's dress as the season's change?

I do for sure but I still retain some of the essence of my character and who I am. My wife and I do a lot of festivals and fairs and when we do I try and go as light on the clothes as I can while still looking professional. One thing I have gotten which works amazingly well is short sleeve tux shirts. They are actually made for the restaurant industry for hotels for people serving outdoors. They look good but very light weight material. I always still wear my fedoara hat (which is great outside in the heat any ways as it keeps me cool.

I'm not sure I quite understand the question. Are you working outside?
The answer if it's that is no. I wear the same costume all the the time. What goes underneath is a matter for me and my dressing mirror! Heavy thermal underwear if you really want to know and perhaps a long sleeve shirt. That keeps me warm. In summer, just a thin all cotton short sleeve shirt, under the costume. If the question relates to working indoors, what's the problem? Over here homes and buildings are usually far too hot anyway so the same light clothes are worn throughout the year. If your work is generally hot, remember to avoid synthetic fabrics which don't absorb sweat. Pure 100% cotton does and leaves you fresher. But at this time of year, working four performances daily, I carry and use four working shirts and I wear another between performances. That way, I remain cool and fresh. Outdoors in winter, even in a heavy shirt, I rarely break sweat. Am I missing something in your question?

I wear a safari outfit (think croc hunter) and it can get a little cold in the winter! But it feels great during the summer/spring/fall!
But I don't change during the year. Well, I do change clothes and wash them...you know what I mean... |

Thanks for sharing. My question may be a little silly. I suppose it's a no brainer that if I am hot, I should lighten my wardrobe.
Mr. James - I'm not typically working out doors, although there are occasional situations. But even inside my outfit is an orvis safari vest, probably similar to Chad's. My persona is Tony The Troutman - a fisherman. But my vest is heavy and suited for the winter. Anyway - I'm in search of a lighter vest that maintains the look and feel of my character. |

Nope - the costume is (was) like my regular outfit, fairly light, and my constant refrain to the family is "real men don't wear coats." A little discomfort is, to me, worth a lot of eliminated hassle (where do you put the coat, is it still there, does it make the setup look cluttered, and on and on)

I don't wear a vest. Think croc hunter - short shorts, a safari shirt that is designed to keep you cool and dry - it has those opening slits on the back, and a white t-shirt underneath. Now, a few years ago I was in a robin hood outfit - now that got a little warm!

Chad - Gotcha, sounds like a good idea for a persona.
Kyle - Thanks for the input. |

Tony, you know my period character and I've stayed faithful to him for years. I've reached a point, though, where I just can't handle the outdoor summer heat in the vest and bowler. I still do indoor shows in my basic wardrobe...but, I'm working with Pricillar Mooseburger to design a more airy, lightweight and semi-historic wardrobe. I've changed my summer hat to a straw Fedora.
In fact, the past three weekends I've gone to my outdoor gigs wearing a colorful Hawaiian shirt, white cotton slacks, deck shoes and the straw Fedora. Not one youngun' enjoyed the show less or failed to recognize me. Basically, while it's good to have a certain branded image, it's still the performer inside the clothes that makes the show fun. As a good, good buddy of mine is often heard to say..."Ya do wha' ya godda do..."

I think our audience will enjoy us more if they are not distracted by worrying about us if we are sweating too much.
Skip - your newer persona sounds like a winner as well. Thanks for sharing... |

Great stuff. My wife and I do perform outfors quite a lot at festivals an fairs. because of this, we have more of a need to change he dress of the costuming we wear frm time to time throughout the season. My goal always is to still look professional and look 1 to 2 levels above the patrons no matter what the temperaure is. I also try and retain as much of my branded look as I can. What I do more of is just dress lighter and have lighter weight shirts and clothes for hotter days when I am working a festival outside. On the colder months I just dress in more layers to stay warm but to still have mobility.

For me it's the same year round. I wear a jacket with sequins, I have 3 different ones I rotate. In the summer I keep the local dry cleaners busy with cleaning them. Nothing worse than having some kid say that you stink....

I rarely do outside events. Inside I exchange vest (kindly made by my wonderful Mother in Law Ruth...) She also does puppet stuff. This week we are wearing the Red, White and Blue one.
My wife's magic word is Dry-El...for some of my clothes that used to be sent to the dry cleaners.(anyone send your straight jacket to a cleaners...or do you do it the old fashion way and do an escape in a pool.../ Just kidding on the last one..do not do not try that one....) Very serious note be safe even in your dangerous work... Harris

I use the same thing year around. The outfit that I wear is what people know me by. It is cool in the summers and some what warm in the winter. Being in Las Vegas I have to worry more about being cool then anything else

It is hot all year round where I live, so careful consideration went into my costume to stay cool, look professional and present the character that I wanted without havng to change costumes throughout the year. I would imagine that this is probably harder to do somewhere that has a big temperature difference between summer and winter
