"Ice From Water" by Andrew Gerard seems like it can make a good mentalism effect. On the video the guy is waving with his hands too much showing it to be a magic trick. But if the hands were presented differently, the right words and the tension, it can pass for mentalism.

You do not need to do any waving of the hands. I remember seeing it up close when Keith Barry had it. Although I knew it already it was pretty amazing to see him dip his hands into a clear glass and come up with chunks of ice.
It's pretty weird. Greg

Here is a clip of Ice From Water performed on TV in Asia by Lu Chen (sp?)
I have performed this as mentalism, magic and superpower ( blowing on the water) It is in the weird miracle class for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l04cERP9nHo best Andrew Gerard

I use this a lot, its fantastic and there are many different ways it can be presented... it is as clean as it looks...

I was wondering if a spectator can put their hand in the water before the effect begins? I think it would be hard to convince the audience far back otherwise that its clear.

A spectator putting his/her hand in the water should be no problem. They really won't need to because the water is crystal clear. Always use spectators for close up view when a large audience is present. It is as a strong mentalism effect.

How large of an audience would this play for?

It is a nice effect and works as easy as it looks in both videos. Nice sell on the Lu Chen video with tossing out the ice onto the table for anyone to check it out. No the spectator can not reach into the bowl. No reason to as the water and bowl or completely clear.

Is the "ice" cold? Can I put it in a mixed drink and enjoy? Serious question thanks.

It could be cold, and I suppose you could put it in a drink, but you probably wouldn't want to.
