I do quite a few effects with a memorized deck, but I think I’m becoming too reliant on my stacked deck. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some good card effects that can be performed with an unprepared (perhaps borrowed) deck. I’m posting this here because my main interest is in close up mentalism.I know that some performers frown upon the use of playing cards in mentalism so I’m going to cower behind the sofa in case my question annoys anyone.

The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.

Ben Earl - 2nd disc in the set is great for this. I also do Eugene's variation of 'Untouched' off the Ammar DVD's, and Spelmann's 'out of sight, just in your mind' is brilliant.
And don't worry about the playing card issue, all the best use them (Osterlind, Maven, Brown, Canasta etc.), so there is nothing wrong with it! |

Check out Predict-Abilities by Mick Ayres. In his e-book you can find some great and easy to do effects with an unprepared deck of cards.

Hey thanks for your replies there look to be some gems here.
Entity i’m very interested in not a dianotic range, and your open prediction project mentioned in another thread. Unfortunately paypal is out foxing me at the moment. I’m showing my ignorance here but can anyone suggest any other sources of unprepared open predictions that I could look into. Mr Lorayne thanks for your reply, baring in mind that I am but a humble student (all be it one with a 21st imminent) my finances may not stretch to a slew at the moment! Are there any books from your canon which you would especially recommend for me (sorry if this isn’t a fair question, it seems a bit like asking you to pick between your children!) Your post has reminded me of my initial solution to this problem. I have a vague idea that I read somewhere that you have the ability to memorize a deck of cards in the time it takes to look through it. For a while after I heard this I fanaticised about the prospect of being able to perform my memorized deck effects with a borrowed deck, Looking through the cards in front of spectators in order to ‘check whether the deck is complete’. Would this be possible........thinking about it now (conveniently having forgotten that I gave up on the idea and so must have failed miserably) the idea intrigues me once more! I guess the problem would be.... the magician borrowed a deck of cards before looking intently at it for several minutes, he then proceeded to perform the most baffling card effects.... unfortunately no one was where to witness this as the audience had grown restless and gone home! |

Royal Road to Card Magic is a treasure trove of card techniques and effects. I've found that most work very well with a mentalism presentation.

I've written about this before - years ago, when I was much younger, I'd excuse myself, say I had to wash my hands, and take the borrowed deck to the bathroom with me. I'd memorize it in a few minutes. I don't need to do that anymore - the card stuff I prefer, and perform, is completely impromptu. So, yeah, I can do it, but I don't. I did, however, do a card thing in my memory appearance, for over twenty years, where I memorized a deck as someone called half the deck almost as quickly as he could. Oh, and my audiences, whether close up or stage, never grew restless, etc. Still don't. HARRY LORAYNE. (Oh, right now I'd recommend THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol. 1, or one of the BEST OF FRIENDS volumes. Please don't tell me about lack of funds. Stop buying magic c***, save your money and buy the stuff that's worth much more than what you pay for it, and that will stand you in good stead for all of your life.

Only thing is that it's not 100% (I had it fail only once out of maybe 10 times, but still...). Another one I often do is Peter Duffie's Outcast which also meets all the conditions of 51 Faces North and works all the time. Steve Beam has insane version called Opened Prediction which at first sight looks like it couldn't fool anyone but it does fool people BADLY. (of course, don't do it to magicians) James File is probably the best source for Open Prediction (actually 51 Faces North) since it has versions of some of the best thinkers in magic including entity's Brrrrr!. It might inspire you to come up with something yours. |

Entity's Brrrr! is a very powerful open prediction, I have never had it fail so far. Also Barrie Richardson's Impromptu ACAAN is another strong one. Perform these two with a good presentation and you have two reputations makers in your arsenal and they both can be done with a borrowed deck.

(1) Gemini twins
(2) out of this world (3) mirabill These 3 effects are miracles in the right hands. They are not to be performed as "tricks". A good performer can tell you to go to hell in such a manner that you look forward to the trip. The only standing ovation that I saw at a magic convention years ago in Chicago was for a man that did the Siberian Chain Escape (cost $1.50). It was all in the blown-up presentation of this simple effect. |
