Hi guys,
I am a close up magician/mentalist, and I also have a hypnosis show. I was just wondering, would I get work on a cruise ship doing what I do? (as in, would close up even interest them or does it have to be a stage show?). And IF they would be interested, where do you start looking for the work? Any help would be great as this is something that I really want to do. Thanks |

...Yawn ,,, what bubbleburst 2004 means is that your particualr question has been responded to time and time again here on the Café.
So, how do you know if you (and your act(s) would get work on a crusie ship and how would you get this work if you could get this work? ...use the Café's magical Search function... and... voila! Your answer will magically appear! Then, if you still have questions after reading pages and pages of sage advice from those in the know here on the Café, you may want to begin posting your questions. Also, check out Paul Romhany's blog on the net and his Cruise ship book. Best regards. Jonathan

Close up doesn't work on ships & many lines won't use hynotists although Princess seems partial to them.

Thanks for the link jlevey, interesting reading!
And Jerskin, that's exactly what I was thinking... But I thought a hypnosis show would be popular enough? Any reasons as to why it isn't? |

Here in ireland there really isn't a problem with lawsuits for hypnosis, then again, hypnosis shows aren't that popular here either so I guess that explains that.
Are there any other reasons? |

Passengers on ships are lawsuit crazy so I don't think the country matters although I have only worked ships that are US based.

There are some lines that fear upsetting religious people. Not a joke. I know a guy that got kicked off a line (a posh one) in Alaska, at the first port after his show, for doing impressions. A guest thought he was in liege with the devil and wasn't comfortable being on the ship with him. He is a comic. A very funny comic at that.

A couple years ago while were were booked on Norwegian Cruise Line we saw a hypnotist performing. Lately we've been working with Royal Caribbean almost exclusively and we haven't seen another hypnotist since. As Greg said, the risk of lawsuits is a factor. You'd be amazed at what passengers comment about and how much those comments can effect bookings.

I know of two major cruise lines whose policy is NOT to book hypnotists OR mentalists!! I have worked on other lines who love hypnotists and hire mentalists as well. I do a midnight mentalist show but advertise it as an adult show - even though there is nothing blue in it. You might want to get yourself an agent who will know what lines to book you for.
Thanks Jonathan for the plug on the BLOG. It just reached the 15 thousand reader mark this past week. I also write for another ezine purely on cruise ship magic. TC - I think you are right:)) Isn't there a similar routine in our upcoming book about the devil by Joe Givan --- worth the wait

I currently work for Princess, and I work with a hypnotist almost every time I'm out. There are currently about 14 ones they use. Just be aware that Hypnotism is a funny thing. Yes, they are booking them now, but next month they could drop them. If you were originally booked as a hypnotist, then you're out of work. Cruiselines will always have magicians, jugglers, etc. your typical variety act. So, whatever you first get booked as will probably be what they'll look at you as always! When I was with carnival I did a hypnosis show for my midnight show. I was, however, first and foremost, a magician.
