I don't usually share with others what I do, but last night was a trip.
I found a new no limit game. And I've teamed up with a café member to take it down. (you know who you are, but keep it on the DL for now). Unfortunately, he wasn't able to go this past night, but I still did. First off, there was a magician there who I kept a close eye on, but in the end he was the first one out. the rules of the game are as follows, but I won't go into too many details in case that magician is on this board 1)You draw for seat assignment. 2)two decks in use (crappy decks that come with the chip set) 3)dealer rotates around the table. 4)big blind shuffles for the next dealer 5)cards must be passed to the right for a cut I am not a hold out man, so I can't even play that edge. Regardless, every time it was my turn to deal, I would peek tops and bottoms; I'll be ***ed if I never hit anything good on the peek. The one time I did, I deuced a burn to hit the top on the flop. As luck would have it, because of that deuce, I flopped a flush draw. with 7 people still in the game, there was know way in hell I was going to stay in. when all I did was hit a pair on the flop. All in all, I moved once all night (unless you want to call the peeks a move), and it still didn't work in my favor. No worries, however, my square game is good and I still ended up coming out ahead. the players there were pretty much easy going, but there was a couple of tournament players, who I swear could read people like a book and were very aggressive. good thing is they came late into the game so they weren't able to get a read on me too soon. I took advantage of that and went all in on them from the get go. I threw there game off and forced them to muck. that brought in some nice coin since the other players were so conservative in there game and wouldn't risk a thing. This Saturday, I have a tourney to play and hopefully my boy can run with me. In the past, I've been the first to go out and then offer to deal for the rest off the night... works great with this one group. |

Hi Loubard
Could you clarify if you are talking about a Cash game or a Tournament?

C.L. mentions that it was the magician who was the first one out, which is typical.
Many magicians grossly overestimate their ability at the poker table, presuming that reading "Card College" gives them some sort of edge. If you come at most poker playing magicians head on and all "Super/System" like, they crumble into little balls and wind up getting everybody chips and drinks for the rest of the night. |

If the cards are old, maybe the tea boy needs to be sent down the street to buy a couple of new decks, maybe from the local shop that you have been into earlier.

Yin and Yang.
I went to a fourth party on friday and wouldn't you know it, a game started up. Better than that my old partner was there. Like a scene right out of rounders, we picked up right where we left off; we couldn't miss last night. As usual, I dumped my chips to him from the get go. From there, I offered to deal the rest of the night, to which everyone agreed. From there, it was on. good times C.L. |

It amazes me how often one can deal for the entire run if one just offers nicely.
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.

I think a lot of players are slightly terrified of actually having to calculate a split-pot, or call an active betting round.
Because poker is so full of posers (like Mandalay Bay on a Saturday night) who don't know how to make such calculations, you get tables thinking that this poor loser offering to deal the WHOLE rest of the night is some sort of saint. |

It's always been common practice in none formal cash games to allow a player who has lost his shirt playing in the game to deal, so the the fella can earn a few bucks in tips. Its more likely that such a player would be asked to deal than someone who has not put any money into the game.

I remember having "fun" by being hired by a casino night company to deal single deck blackjack one evening because they were short staffed.
It only happened once and I was in my 20s....What fun I did not persue it because I just graduated college and had a real job. I was also too busy dating to worry about dealing at casino nights on the weekends. I guess it is all a matter of personal priority

I don't know if I've ever seen a thread go further sideways quite as fast as this one.

Magicians around a card table are often funny. Theres's a big difference between the real world (private, casual games) and a stage. You don't necessarily got a brand new top-fashion mat in the real world. Many times, you don't even have enough space to shuffle correctly! And we won't talk about some crappy decks you've got to deal with sometimes... It's always a big laugh when I watch Magicians talking 'bout cheating and performing classic passes, 125 ladder cuts or light speed shuffles. Some are not even aware you find cut cards in maybe 75% of amateur games now. And half of those tables use plastic decks (well, here in Europe). Top of the top is when they talk about "rules". You MUST shuffle that way, you MUST deal that way, they proceed THAT way in casinos, and so on. No one of them has ever put a foot on a casino! And the final laugh is their gaze when you talk about bobtails. The audience is sometimes funny too. "Don't play with him, he's a Magician! He does whatever he wants with pasteboard!". Sorry guys, but a Magician ain't a Cheat! |

Nevertheless if a magician was a player at your poker table would you cheat?
Do you think you could cheat Ricky Jay or other top card guys who are magicians?

I remember playing poker at magic conventions when I was younger. The idea was to cheat and not get caught. If you were caught you lost the pot and tried again next time.
It was a fun thing to do at 2:00 AM

Well, do you think all magicians have the same proficiency on card cheating than Jay's ? If the guy is a top one with a deck of cards, it will be hot enough to fool him, whether he's a cheat or not. And Ricky Jay is one of them. But according to the average level of proficiency on card cheating I can check among Magicians, I can assure you there should be no great danger to cheat with any of them around a table. Have you ever watched videos of so-called "Magicians-cheats" like Vanel or Burt or (write here 100 other Magicians names)? I sometimes wonder if they're aware about kills, stacks or even second dealing! |

I think: Seasoned gamblers are laymen but they know the rules, magicians are not layman and neither know nor care about the rules because they can make them. I think I would love to cheat Ricky Jay and give him back his dough and not tell him how.

Speaking of Ricky Jay, I went to Ricky Jay and his 52 Assistants yesterday for Opening Night. It was a very nice show. His backdrop looks like one of my dream rooms. There was a moment of trouble and either his acting was spot on or he was actually in a jam. Taye Diggs was in the audience and he made the rest of us look like trolls.
Onward... to the other side.
