Thor Equities will not develop anything in Coney Island. They will hammer for rezoning, making grand plans and huge promises to the city, then when the rezoning happens, Thor will flip the property to other developers that are not beholden to Thor's promises. Those developers will do what they want. Thor has done this several times before. This is all they do. They have never developed an amusement park and the play they put forth are too grand for their company to do. It is all about retail and residential.
Coney Island is gone, folks. Condoland by the Sea is what will replace it. |

Oh, one more thing. In that article the mouthpiece for Thor said they wanted to develop Coney Island into something used by many and not just a few. Currently 13 million people annually visit Coney Island. That seems like more than a few.

As a matter of curiosity, how many people will be able to live in the condos? And they wouldn't happen to be high-priced, would they?

If the politicians think they can get away with it they will. They will NEVER come down on the side of what doesn't benefit them the most...in votes or in their pocket. New York lost it's nuts years ago and sadly will be California east without a shot fired.
Harley: The key word is 'affordable housing'. In other words another inner city crap hole within a decade.

The thing I find amusing is that this high end retail/residential will be right across the street from housing projects. Unless they kick out all the low end folks (a possibility) it will be a situation of predators and prey living side by side.
NY has lost its character. It is becoming a huge housing tract for the white collar working drones. They will eat and shop in chain franchises and have no money left over to support anything resembling culture. But that is fine with them because he have not been exposed to culture and therefore it has no meaning for them. And that is fine, because all the nuturing spots for culture have been force out of NYC by high rents. Colorado is looking better and better to me. |

You really think 'they' will risk the rath and empty the projects? Your just getting new Projects, semi disguised.
I moved into brand NEW projects in Staten Island in 1965. You had to be on a waiting list and the list was not what you think. They wanted working families not welfare losers. (In the beginning. Of course they couldn't advertise that fact but the Projects were built in a decent area to begin with.) They were beautiful...well built...all the amenities, nice park areas...by 1967 they were headed fast track downhill inner city and we moved to California. Within another couple of years it was gang central with non working elevators broken windows unlit walkways and trash everywhere and a graffitti art gallery. The pigs will out because that's the way it is set up. Schools and houseing geared to the bottom rung and managed by the bottom feeders, the politicians.

Whats sad about "The Future Of Coney Island" bullshoot, Thor has given a bunch of the little "mix tape' booths and food stands these really big, beautiful, artsy banners that say "The Future of Coney Island" on them and have a coney-esque landscape, it seems as if the vendors think they came from Coney Island USA.
