I received David Regal's Translocations today and I am very pleased. It is based on John Kennedy's brilliant Translocation and David has had new coin gaffs made to make it super easy to do and very baffling to the spectator. I buy a lot of David's stuff and have been thinking about this for a while and last week he convinced me. He just had a new run of the gaffed coins made, and he dropped the price $55. I believe it was $195 and the new price is $140. Some might think this is a lot for two gaffed coins, five coins total, but they are very well made and I expect them to last a lot longer than I do. The routine is very straight-forward and not confusing, as some coins across routines can be. Using three different coins (American half-dollar, English penny, and Chinese coin with a hole in it) help to make each transformation very clear. The hole in the Chinese coin also makes the gaff more convincing. Both side of all coins are shown many times, and there is no clue as to how the transformations take place. I believe that this is in the performing range of anyone who is willing to take a little time and practice. The DVD is very well made, and each part of the routine and gaffs is explained by David in his usual clear, direct manner. At the end of his explanations, I had no questions about anything. I believe that this routine will also be good for you to use to fool your fellow club menbers, even the ones who are familiar with coin routines and coin gaffs. This is a baffling routine, complete with quality props and crystal-clear video instructions, at, in my opinion, a very fair price, especially with the new price cut. The only additional thing I would have liked would be a pdf file on the disc containing a written version of the routine. I am an old fogey who still prefers print to video. I suspect that this is avoided because the instrutions would be shared too easily, but in this cyber age, where dvd's are so easily copied, I think that this is a moot point. Dudes who are going to steal are going to do it regardless of any precautions. I highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in visual, magical coin transpositions. As a "reader", I also have to mention David's recent "Approaching Magic", which I believe will become a "classic" book. Truly something for everyone.

Thanks.
One of the gaffs in Trans-Locations must be constructed partially by hand, which is why the cost is the cost. That, and the fact that small custom runs simply cost more than large runs. Even this larger run - which brought the cost down from where it was - is still a small run in the "real world." We all know that there are coin sets out there that cost $300 and have only one gaff, so at least $140, which is still serious money, is much less serious money. In addition, that particularly scarce gaff can be used in other contexts - for example, to perform Tommy Wonder's "Socked Coin" routine from his DVDs. So, if anyone out there has the Tommy Wonder DVDs, check out "Socked Coins" - now you can do it. |

This really is a good routine. I was going to buy this, but it doesn't fit the conditions where I perform, or want to perform. Anyway, this fooled most magicians at my club when he lectured. The Chinese coin has a real hole, no cloth! This means that you can perform on any color surface. If you like Translocation, this will be a great new variation!

Translocations is awesome! Just having this set of well made gimmicks was worth it for me!
I also recently bought all of David's books including his latest one "Approaching Magic". The value for money and strength of the magic in these books is outstanding! David also has a very happy knack of coming up with fun and engaging plots that really DO entertain. He provides great lessons in scripting, pacing, plot construction and plenty more besides the magic itself. I too must add to the chorus of Regal fans, I usually don't subscribe to the theory of buying something just because of the creator's name but in David's case I have to make an exception! Cheers, Al

I'll say it again, David's stuff is top notch. I own Approaching Magic, Close-Up and Personal, Pure Filth, Off With His Head, Regal Color Changing Deck, Disposable Deck, Sudden Deck II, Pasteboard Massacre, and all four volumes of Premise, Power, Participation. As you can see, I am a huge David Regal fan. All of my purchases from him are great, and I don't regret any of them.

I not only bought this effect with the beautifully gimmicked coin and none gimmicked coins.....I bought 2. Unfortunately I bought both at the original price but still feel like I got a bargain. What else could I say but that after I already bought at the higher price. LOL
Great effect, routine, and coins for sure like everyone else has stated but the reason I wanted to chime in is because I had the pleasure of meeting David at the Magic Castle swap meet last month(he also was kind enough to take a picture with me which was an added treat for someone like me who lives on the east coast)and he was very kind with no air or ego about himself. By the way I travel extensively for my job and have run into and met top performers and creators in magic, so from my personal experience this is rare. Later in the day I was taking a picture with Jonathan Levitt and David happened by and stuck his head into the picture in only the way David can and made a funny expression and that picture has turned out to be one of my favorite pieces of magic memorabilia. I will hang it on my wall of fame back home. Thank you David Regal for your contributions to magic and for also making a lasting memory for me to talk about for many years. I'm very tall and David had the person taking the pictures take more with him standing on a chair so we could be the same height. It was hilarious and we were having a ball. What a guy!!!!! |

Has anyone tried this as a stand-up piece? David set it could be done that way in lieu of a table.

I like the line about how they only had 51 cents and a subway token - not enough. But then they each do make the trick. I think you should either come up with a humorous way that each of them come up with the money OR claim that the first to travel over seas had some good fortune and was able to send for the others. |
