There is no guarantee of COMPLETE safety. Do you think it's some kind of fake?
An ironclad signed liability waiver would seem to be essential. And for heaven's sake, don't believe a single one of those books (old or new) that purport to give some formula for a salve, or method of preparation for your feet, or "trick" to building the fire. They are guaranteed to be dead wrong. |

A guarantee?
People who know it, still get burned sometimes. How can they guarantee it? Why would you trust someone who'd teach you in an open forum? They're more showing off that they know something, than giving information that benefits you. We have a couple of posters here, that do that. Some of them will probably join this thread later, even though they've never seen this, never done it. Do you want half-*ssed information, so that you do it in a half-*ssed way, and burn off half your participants *sses, then lose your own, when lawyers get involved? This is a dangerous stunt. It's worth your while, to find an expert. If you wanted to learn a double lift, you might attend your local magic club, and consult with someone who'd been doing it for years. That person would show you how to hold the deck, manage the sleights, help you through your mistakes. For firewalking, you might need to travel a little farther, but you should still go in person. There are things to learn, that cannot be told outside of the actual experience.

Nobody can make such a guarantee. Nobody. Period. If they do, they're dishonest. Period.
Vincent, if you want to learn the process, you need a live teacher, not a DG. Probably, you'll have to pay for the training, just as you have for your professional counseling certifications: Money to a teacher, and then you put in time, study, and supervised effort. Your website says that you're a certified stage hypnotist. I know of no certified hypnotists who've gotten there by reading a book. You must, must, must have practicum. This is no different, and in this, it's even more important. You're preparing to teach people to do something that, if done wrong, can seriously impair their physical integrity, as well as inflicting emotional damage. And something WILL go wrong. It's the nature of the beast. When you walk on fire, you WILL get burned. That's not a question. The questions are: When will it happen? How bad will it be? How do you cope with it, when it does go wrong? Based on the way you're writing, it sounds as if you might have booked yourself a job doing this, when you have no training to support it. I hope this isn't the case. I know the work on this. However, it would be totally irresponsible to teach it here, for me or anybody else.

I've just got some interesting avenues that have come up. I guess I will have to make a decision about what to do and how long its gonna take. |

Figure what you want to do first. And please don't rush it. While a lot of the technical parts of this aren't difficult, there can be heavy emotional loads. Some folks learn it fast. Some take longer. Some don't ever get it.
Think of it, as a therapist. There's intent. There's action. The processing time between them is 1/10 of a second. But if the intent is unclear, the actions only mirror that. And that intent is rooted in personal history...you know how bizarre that can be. There are courses that teach how to teach this. I've seen a couple of folks work, who took them. One was very good. The other was terrible, spent a lot of time going "hoo hoo" and trying to get pumped up. He sounded stupid, even moreso because he had a high voice, and was trying to use tones which were well below his vocal range. How was he going to inspire the people he was supposedly teaching? Adrenalin on command...THERE's a good way of making good decisions. I think of that as a fear response, and it strikes me as bad training, when you use one fear response, to attempt to counter another. There's nothing to build on, nowhere to go, that you aren't already. It's just one hand, punching the other. You're busy fighting, so you can't use your hands for anything else. Thank you for reconsidering your approach. And in the meantime, welcome to this part of the Café. This is the place where we specialize in the real, and most of us are, let us politely say, quirky.

Oooo! Ooo! can I be sarcastic too?!
Just rent the DVD "The Jewel of the Nile" with Michael Douglas... there's a scene that gives it all away. Danny DeVito gets caught by some arabs, they make him join their gang by making him walk across coals. All you need is a guy juggling fire or blades. Have the juggler walk towards the walker with his back to the hot coals. The walker will be so scared of the juggler that he won't even know he's already standing on hot coals. After that, it's all a cinch. Or...... It's not really hot coals.... you use a technique involving cold flame. Or...... It's all done with red lighting, fans, silk fabric and confetti.

I love the way Harley says:-
"can seriously impair their physical integrity," Me I say "it can seriously mess up your feet!" but Harley "impair integrity" as though its a posh activity! I love Harley - I got to meet him some day - mean time I keep reading the anus guarding trickster book (can you tell where I got to Harley?) |

Dave is referring to "The Trickster" by Paul Radin. This is a must-read book, for anybody in this business, for a variety of reasons. None of the reasons have to do with stunts.
I guess you're liking it, a lot!

*** YOU HARLEY I was going to make a fortune!
Hey I watched once from 20 foot away ........... Didn’t get burnt then either! I know all the theory - I would never touch it from a million miles away without a trained person. Hell I do other fire stuff – fire eating, breathing and yogi sparks from mouth but not fire walking. I really would suggest getting a teacher on this one – as with ANY side show stuff. I bet ken brooks has done it – and I am sure there are others out there. If you are really desperate you could get in touch with one of these groups that do charity fire walks. I had not clicked that you were in the UK Vincent – hey if you want to get together some time to talk shop that would bee cool – but there will be no “experimenting” unless I can get some of the little b-stards from school I am at to volunteer : ) I have a couple in mind that it would be good to “experiment on”! : ) I just looked over my post about “it’s easy” “give me $250 and ill tell ya” thing – I had not intended to mislead anyone to think I had actually fire walked! I was “playing” silly b-stards – hey I never lied though! I promise I would have stopped short of sending you preparation H (but unfortunately not before taking your $250 ….. but that’s only about 20p these days ). If you want I can give you the name of a group doing fire walks for charity – but I have not had contact with them since about 1999 and at the time they looked like they knew what they were doing (no one got burnt – but I’m no judge of if they were doing it right! It could be they got lucky! Fair assumption I suppose). How about this for a proposition we go half’s on Harleys class fees and travel expenses – I go over there and then report back to you? MMM I can’t see that working. Dave |

By the way just to point out, I went firewalking last friday, it was good. I really enjoyed it.
I would still love to learn how to become a firewalk instructor, hopefully I can arrange something soon but I also have a lot of other goals that need forfilling and therefore not a massive amount of time . anyway that message is there if anyone fancies helping me in the future, I live in the UK. Thanks all for the advice, it helped me make my decision to firewalk. many thanks |
