If people treat me like this there is no reason for me to post here anymore. I've appreciated the time I've had here everyone, and the great people I've met, but this is ridiculous, I've had enough. That is the way here. Sad but true. It is why the art is dying. Actually, you can't expect everyone, at everytime, to be willing to help you. You hit the right person at the wrong time, or the wrong person at any time, for what you seek. If you are truly interested, be patient and give it time. FWIW. |

Just don't worry about it man. As you can see from this thread, Arrogant, childish, stuck-up behavior is nothing new among magicians.
Andrew, (ASW)
The effects on the DVD and lecture notes are far beyond your abilities. (They require mastery of the mechanic's grip.) It would only break your heart. Sincerely, Darwin Ortiz.......(This post has got to be in my top 5.) |

"Magicians helping Magicians" IS NOT THE SAME AS "Magicians spoon feeding Magicians". The reality is magic is not a brotherhood. It is more akin to a high school clique. Pros, amateurs, underground, flourishers, box guys, stage guys, coin guys, card guys...the list goes on.
Sometimes being nice doesn't work. Sometimes the truth hurts. I admittedly lack eloquence when it comes to stuff like this. I apologize for offending the gentler attitudes here. |

Another "I'm leaving the Magic Café" post.......too late though, as there's been one already this week.
Why should you care what ANYBODY here thinks about your post? Think about it.......nobody here even KNOWS YOU. Post away fishsticks, you've as much right to as anybody. Magicians helping magicians?........did you learn anything as a result of your post?.....THAT'S what it's about, not being the most friendly folks in the world ALL THE TIME and to everybody who posts on the Café from now to eternity......especially if it's in response to a dodgy post. |

On a positive note, I think "Strange Tasting Fish Sticks" is possibly the best name I've ever heard of on TMC. So, I think he deserves some credit for that.
Personally, I think everyone was a bit rough on him. Robert |

It does seem like it might have been his first encounter with another magician...

In all fairness Tempesta (sean), Luther borrowed that from my post...I told Sticks to take up stamp collecting.
And yes I have heard of etiquette, which is why I would NEVER do what Sticks did. Not even when I was just getting started. |

Funny fish, I'm not sure what your talking about his act is great, and the audience seems to love it. past that what makes you think he needs to please you as a "magician" I live about 15 mins from there btw and I was there watching that act. I'm not sure why he should care about your tricks. he was there WORKING. anyway.
oh, I think its Kozmo he is talking about... the trick and lines I heard him say this past weekend |

We may as well take this topic in a positive direction in hopes that it might prevent the next guy from making these mistakes!
I remember going to Hollywood Magic in the beginning and just hanging around, watching the sales guy do demos, looking through the books and asking questions like "where should I go from here" or "what would you suggest I read for this" etc etc. I never bugged em for the how to's and I certainly never tried to impress anyone with what I did know. After a time, I was there talking to one of the senior card guys that usually helped me and he introduced me to the owner and a couple of the younger employees as "one of the good guys" and to give me a hand whenever he wasn't around! Humility goes a longgggggggg way in this game I think that by keeping a low profile and giving respect to the working guys ESPECIALLY when the are working, chances are if they see you around enough they may be willing to give you a tip, show you a trick or even take you on as a student! Enthusiasm is a good thing but OVER enthusiasm and trying to one up a guy or asking him to show you his secret is and always will be bad form! Hopefully Kevin will shake this off and continue his studies and reach the level he wishes! Hopefully those in the know can be patient with the new guy and attempt to guide him! Personally I prefer to remain the student! Mick |

I had a feeling it was Koz based on the coin from eye trick. He was doing that at LVMI to me, vinny, and mikey silver. Good for stopping and building a crowd.
He's a character, that Kozmo! We shared a room at LVMI and he got in late the first night with his suitcase and a pillowcase full of money he earned that day out at the Promenade is Santa Monica or wherever. Kozmo definitely knows how to get the money.

Their is a differences between coddling and helping. Sometimes you need to set a person straight to help them.
Perhaps, we are a little aggressive when setting a person straight, but really, is that such a bad thing? Reading some of the posts, I wonder if all this love is helpful. The art is dying? Because magicians don't like the new guy to insult the more experienced guys because the more experienced guys won't babysit them? Welcome to the real world.... It hasn't been nicer to me than anyone else, but the more experienced people get there by thickening their skin, and becoming a better student than a more efficient mooch. Hopefully Fishstick, which isn't the first "Fishstick" on the Café', has learned something from the people helping. If you think experienced magicians owe anyone anything, Look at any trade in the world. No one will ever give you anything because of some right you believe you have to the knowledge. It will always cost you something. You are owed nothing, ever, from anyone.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.
