I ordered a half dollar size Chinese coin which turned out to be about half the weight of a half dollar. I'm not really happy with it! Can anyone recommend a decent half dollar size Chinese coin with a hole in the center?

These are the ones I use all the time. They have a good weight to them.

The photo doesn't do the coin justice. See better photos of the same coin here.

That is the half dollar size chinese coin I use as well and I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Yeah I have it too and it's a nice 'chunky' coin to use...

You might also want to look at this Chinese coin, click HERE to view.

This is a pewter coin, about the same weight as a half dollar. It doesn't tarnish and is very durable. This is not as shiny as the brass Johnson coin, but to my mind, it's a bit more "authentic" looking and also has some nice texture and detail to it. And the price is right! SETH

The johnson coins are great.
I also have the jumbo 3" chinese coin and it is absolutely stunning to look at.
Heavy as h3ll and just beautiful. quite expensive tho. but what a piece.

for a great trick with chinese coins, check out john bannon's "shanghai surprise"
from Impossibilia. A great trick. Easy. Quite surprising and only uses 2 chinese and 1 C/S.

So if you're buying a chinese coin, get 2, just in case.

I wish vendors would post the Chinese coins in the correct orientation. That one is up-side down Smile. You do have to be a little careful-- I got a 3 inch one recently where the characters were engraved as a mirror image-- it looked ridiculous and I had to send it back.

There's some additional info on chinese coins being discussed in this thread:

The best ones I've seen are sold in Troy Hooser's Charming Chinese Challenge coin set.

Yes, I also have Charming Chinese Challenge DVD and coins and I like those. They match my Johnson's CSB and Hong Kong Coin ] too! They are smaller and thicker/heavier. Depending on what I'm using them for, I sometimes prefer these and sometimes prefer the thinner ones that I described on the other thread (along with all the accompanying gaffs).

I find the Johnson Coins too thick for CCC; Hooser uses the Sterling Chinese coins, they are similar in design to the Johnson coins, with smaller lettering, and are much thinner. The Johnson coins are slightly thicker than a half dollar

My mistake. I have a lot of different varieties of chinese coins. THe ones I have for CCC are the same ones that he uses in the DVD. I just got them confused with the others that I have.

That is sound advice Frank offered up. That's exactly what I did (actually bought one extra Chinese coin shortly after purchasing Johnson's S/C/B). I LOVE Shanghai Surprise Too! I often wonder why I don't see more workers using it.

Frank, do you happen to have a photo of your jumbo? I'd love to see it. When I was looking for one myself, I had HEARD of the elusive Johnson Jumbo, but could never manage to find it (not that I probably would have paid whatever the astronomical price probably would have been). I found a very affordable jumbo that looks/works great for my routine. Do you mind my asking what the Johnson jumbo set you back?

Cheers, Wes

Why can't there be a "delete function" available so we can tidy things up when we accidentally double post? All I could do is "edit".

Ditto this. For CCC the sterling are the way to go, but Johnson's are thicker and nicer for other routines. Additionally, Todd Lassen has some nice ones he has introduced, but you are going to pay for them. (http://www.toddlassen.com/mec.htm)
Note, the picture has Silver Dollar sized coins, but he says he had half size coins as well.

Are these the ones you mentioned? http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/product.php?productid=6808

If not where can I pick up a set?

Jerry100won,

If those are the same ones as sold on Hocus-Pocus, then yes, those are the ones. Just search "charming chinese challenge" on hp and they'll come up beside the DVD.
