There's no need for the sarcasm, but think about it from this perspective: Let's say you've been a guitarist for 20 or so years, and you have mastered the guitar. Then someone comes up to you and says something like, "hey I'm not very patient and I want an easy way to learn in 1 or 2 weeks what you've spent your life mastering." Kind of strikes a cord with people. I've solved the Rubik's cube, literally, over 10,000 times in my life. My average time is about a minute on the 3x3x3, about 5 minutes on the 4x4x4 and about 8 minutes on the 5x5x5. I find it quite comical when people come up to me and say, "so how do you solve it? can you teach me real quick." The answer is, "yes I can teach you, but it won't be real quick." My Rubik's cube lessons consist of only 6 lessons. Each lesson is only 15 to 20 minutes of me teaching. The rest is several weeks of the student practicing what I explained to them. You can't master it and make is smooth without putting in the time. Anyway, having said all that, the best advice I can give you is what I did. I read Annemann's book (Practical Mental Effects) about 5 or 6 times. I spent hours and hours and hours and hours reading, re-reading, thinking about marking up the book, etc. When I was done, I felt I had a firm grasp on what mentalism was. Then I read Corrinda's 13 steps. That sort of solidified my understanding of mentalism. Finally, after I got a really good sense of what mentalism is and what it means to me. I then got some DVDs and books of modern mentalists to help me develop some routines: -John Archer -Richard Osterlind -Max Maven Hopefully that helps. Good luck. |

Chrispa1,
It also seemed as though you had chosen mentalism because you felt it may be 'easier' than other forms of magic. Let me add one more analogy... Someone asks you for advice on how to become an instant radio presenter. Im sure you are fantastic at what you do and take it very seriously. The notion that the job you do could be easily replicated by giving a few 'pointers' would be crazy... and potentially offensive to you given the amount of time learning and effort it has taken you to get where you are The mention of Corinda being packed away somewhere, having never been read, along with a few other comments, felt as though your initial question was not from a place of sincere desire to learn the art. This really is a great place for magicians helping magicians...., and I really do mean this with respect, but, behave like one and you will receive all the help you need. Find your copy of 13 steps mate. That book really is all you need to get a serious start.... and, if it strikes a chord with you and becomes something you wish to pursue, I feel that you will be a welcome addition to the fraternity because of enthusiasm you so obviously have. Best of luck buddy, Paul |

Thanks guys. I do understand what you are all saying. I do have respect but when I was younger I wanted to learn it all, do it all and had the money to buy whatever I wanted with my career at that point. This is when I bought the 13 steps. Although still interested and drawn to mentalism I was strictly doing magic but I bought the book anyways for later. I will get it out, read it, study it. I currently have some items I am working on, but want more of a "mind reading" technique than anything else. Thanks again.

I've generally found the presentations to be a bit weak or dated but we should all strive for our own anyway. One constantly hears that 13 Steps is not enough yadda yadda yadda. Yet, well-known names (which I won't repeat because I am only 90% sure) have repeatedly said that they, and other PROFESSIONALS they know, can do entire sets straight out of 13 Steps. You could probably do a search to find out who said it. Keep that in mind when people tell you that you need "this" or "that" isn't enough. They are only sharing their opinion. I mean, I don't know about you, but I tend to trust people who perform for a living and are successful enough that I have heard of them compared to forum rats like most of us. With that being said, I personally think a foundation in 13 Steps, followed by Mind, Myth, & Magick, along with something like "Absolute Magic", "Strong Magic", or "The Alchemical Tools" would be more than enough to hit the ground running. Once you get experience, Psychological Subtleties I/II from Banachek would be a great addition but I think that one can only appreciate it later. Read 13 Steps. Cover to cover. Mark down areas that interest you but go through the whole thing. There are subtleties in later steps that make earlier steps that much better. Look at MM&M for application ideas. Then perform what you found interesting. Then, and only then, should you branch out. My opinion of course but think about how education in any other field works. You focus on one thing, then move on to applying it, then learn something more advanced. People who recommend, and this is a real example, that you buy everything you can know nothing about education, memory, etc. NOTHING. But that is just centuries of educational study... -Lem |

Ok cool thanks I have some things I will get and look into. I just bought Dan Harlans mentalism show pack small play big and I really like some of the things in it, just not as powerful of a reaction I want. I like the headline prediction and know I can pull that off with some practice pretty good. I will look into mind myth and magick too

One of the best parts about reading Annemann's PME and Corrinda's 13 steps is that the material IS dated... The principles are sound, but the material needs to be modernized. That gives us, the readers/performers, the perfect opportunity to get creative and build our own modern variations.
This makes our shows more "original" and more personal to who we are as performers. |

What station are you on? I'd be more than happy to perform some mentalism as a call in guest to your show.

I’d recommend the Invisible Deck, but they never seem to work right after a few days. Maybe I’ve just had a run of bad luck with them.
A much better investment for you would be to learn Richard Osterlind’s Breakthrough Card System. It’s not too tough, and will allow you to perform many stunning effects. Elliott |

Rats!!! I was just in North Carolina the last two weekends. Man that Ashville Airport is SMALL
I'm starting a bunch of new shows next week. Let's get this Party Started!!!!! I can send promo if you'd like. The ID was the first thing I learned and it could still KILL if I still did cards. A stack system is also a good idea as stated above. I liked Si-Stebbins.

Stebbins is good, easy, and powerful (I am a big fan myself,) but can't withstand a detailed inspection. I figured the extra effort spent on the Osterlind system would serve chrispa1 well.

I'll second that on the Osterlind system. Definitely worth the work, and the beauty of using it is that you can really take your time, if needed, to think through the system while you're performing on stage. It really sells the idea that you are digging into the spectator's mind.
