I use the Destination box strolling, especially in my bar work. I work every Friday and Saturday atleast in bars and clubs, in student areas or even like my residency, an up market cocktail bar, and I use this ALL the time, if I go out performing, this comes too. The nice think about the box, is it will fit in my jacket pocket. But I personally carry it to the table or group of people I am performing to. Everyone is immediately interested in who I am and why I have come up to them with this box. I give it to the furthest person away and go straight into my act. As soon as the items have been dumped out the box, the box goes straight into my pocket leaving me with just the two items. I like the idea of having a mini ID in there, as it takes the heat away from the pill box, as you can ask the person before they give the box back to name any card, and inside is a deck of cards. So they think the box was there to hold the thought of selection, then you kill them by showing they were holding onto the signed selection the whole time as well. Very strong, very commercial, and still highly recommended!

A while ago there was a stupid comparison between boxes and the size of TDB was seen as a negative. For me, I carry the box around during M 'n' M events. When I approach a group I ask who the most trustworthy person is and they look after the box by either holding it or by having on the floor at their feet. A pocket is required to acheive the effect (the key is in it for a start) but I have a couple of TTs in the same pocket and they do not interfere with proceedings. I do this routine at every possible opportunity whether it's tables or walkaround. It tops and tails the set which works in both types of surroundings. Hope this answers the question. Jon p.s. I'm trying to get a YouTube video up and running of me doing it at a table. I will probably only keep it up there for a week or so with weird keywords. I'm not keen on having things meant for a live audience disected online by people who think it's a game to try and work out magic on videos. I'll let you all know on this thread when it's successfully uploaded. Any public comments made about the methodology and it will get pulled.

Since we're talking about it, I can't help but ask if you might consider making a smaller Destination Box? Not that there's anything wrong with the current size. But, I guess this is why I never purchased one.
Also, I've never seen a box with an over-sized padlock like this except in magic. For me, the perfect Destination Box would one that is a little smaller with an even smaller padlock that doesn't dwarf the box. JMHO, Robert |

Hi Robert,
I actually designed the box to fit around the pillbox. I also wanted the box to look substantial and not cheap. For me, the box is pretty much the optimum size. I guess the walls could be thinner but then it would seem flimsy. I had toyed around the idea of making a box out of cheaper wood but I wanted this to be a quality item that looked good. I also wanted it to be a feature piece as opposed to a little box for a trick. I don't think something the size of a matchbox would garner the interest that this box does. As for the padlock, it is not over-sized (and definitely does not dwarf the box)but it merely hangs down below the level of the base. There's nothing to stop you finding a smaller one and using that instead. However, it shouldn't look too tiny and fragile. I do have people pull on it and try to wrench it open! Funnily enough I originally wanted a keyhole but it was pointed out to me that there us no way of knowing, just by looking, whether the box is locked or not. Hence, I went with the hasp & staple route and the padlock. With a padlock you definitely know the box is locked. Cheers, Jon

Jon,
So the current destination boxes are different to the original ones? I saw the clip on Ellen and that looked nothing like the one you used in Spectators Don't Exist. |

The boxes are the same as they have always been. If you refer to the keyhole comment, I meant that during the design phase I wanted a keyhole to keep to all flat but was advised against it so I never got them made that way.
I have uploaded a video to YouTube of me performing with TDB from the initial entrance to the table, through an edited card trick then the final reveal. I uploaded it last night, YouTube says it is live but there is no sign of it. I have used the keywords 'Jon Allen Destination Box Magic'. If anyone finds it, please let me know!

OK, the video is now available! Type in the keywords and you'll find it. I think you can simply put in Destination Box and you'll see it there.

Very nice, and great reactions too! Thanks for sharing that Jon.
How long would you spend resetting that in between tables? And do you ever use the bottle for anything? |
|||||||||
Jon Allen V.I.P. England 1771 Posts |
Hi Mark, the reset time is the time it takes to replace the bottle and lock0 the box. I reckon 15 - 20 seconds should do it. I reset as I go from one table to the next. Even if I haven't managed to reset it in time before I get to a table (i.e. they call me straight over) I have no qualms about locking the box when I'm at the table introducing myself.
As for the bottle, I don't personally use it for anything... except for the humourous situation if it gets chosen. The nice thing is that you do not have to use the bottle. It can be anything else you like: a missing pen cap (like Michael Close does), a lucky charm, a piece of paper, a business card etc. Jon p.s. The best reactions are the ones where there is never a camera to capture them!

I have to concur.
I received my box last week and since then my mind has been reeling with all the possibilities. Presently I am doing some PW with one of the components and it works perfectly. The revelation from impossible place is definitely a notch or two above the rest. I also received courteous and helpful correspondence from Jon. Thanks Jon, Eric |

Hi all,
This is a fantastic magical piece. This is perfect for mentalism and bizarre magic. Besides the impossible location CTB - this is perfect for example, a seance. I was talking to Jon and telling him about how cool it is... because its not the size of the box - its the narrative etc. that gives a spooky presentation. Imagine combining this with a 7 keys variation to get it open, and inside are the various remains of the spirit that was contacted... and one item is a pocket watch stopped at the time of death that a spec freely selected... inside the watch is a note such as a last wishes which contains various things spectators divined via psychometry holding the box... whatever... this thing is very cool. I have to say the instructional DVD that came with it was excellently done by Jon as I love all the nuances and routining he perfected to make this a real worker - and a killer worker at that. So, besides walk-around card magic - think about all the wild possibilities... and with a spec holding the box through the build up... Oh yeah - imagine a drawing dupe.... spec draws a picture as part of the build-up proceedings... inside the box is a wrapped up stone with an almost identitical picture inscribed upon.... I love boxes like this - and this is really cool. Plus for those of you too timid for seance / dark bizarre magic - the box contents are all customizable to make it a major utility device - Jon tips a lot of uses besides the CTB.... but heck, I'm a dark magic mizarrist. Thanks again Jon and kudos to you!

Bruce,
I love the idea of a 7 keys presentation. There's a whole routine before the box is even opened! It's also a clever idea to use a pocket watch that not only contains a prediction (or a card) but also shows a freely chosen time. I never thought of those as ideas. Great thinking for your particular area of performance. It's great that someone has looked at the prop and figured out a way to really personalise it in ways I never thought about. I'm really glad the box is working for you and kudos to you for coming up with some great presentations!

Hello all,
Just like to come in on this again...i am still doing this week in week out at every table I perform at, and never ceases to get a great reaction. Well, two new things I have to add for this. The first is the silver box that holds the card. I am tempted to find a new ending for my ACR, as I came up with something stronger, well, it got better reactions last night should I say! I combine it with the Viking Brass nest of boxes and switch out box. So they open the box and a small brass box is inside...i take it out, inside of which is another box, and another box, and another box etc...until their coin is in the last one. I also came up with a better option for the second item! I don't believe this has been suggested before...i put a chocolate in there as a second item!(A ferrero rocher). Then I tell them that inside of the box, I have two items for them. A chocolate, and a silver box of mystery, which would they prefer...always gets a laugh as the women always want the chocolate! I give it to them and say for being such a good sport, I will let them have the contents of the box as well...they look inside and inside is their signed card. (Will also work with brass nest of box idea) Cheers and enjoy~! |

Hi Chris,
Nice ideas indeed! I know a number of people who have used a variewty of items as the extra object. It's a nice touch to use something you can give someone. As least there is no chance of the chocolate going stale because it's been left for months on end! Jon
