I've bought the liability insurance the IBM offers for many years, but sometimes wonder if it is a quality (or even necessary) product. Does anyone have any experience filing a claim? What were the circumstances? How were you treated?

I too have bought this for years and I treat it as any other insurance I buy just like for my auto, it only is necessary should you actually have a claim, the problem with that is when would that be? Being uninsured puts you at great risk and I don't like to gamble that way. I do actually know of a magician who had a claim when he was hired to do opening of a new bank, and while using a piece of flash string melted a spot in their carpet in a 40 by 80 foot lobby, good thing he had the insurance

It not only wise to have coverage, but it is quickly and justly becoming a business requirement. Many malls, daycares, schools and the like require a certificate of insurance before you walk through their doors. I consider it a necessary business expense and, frankly, one less thing to worry about.
I've been with Performers of the U.S. for several years and I've never heard a single negative thing regarding their support. I've always been pleased.

No doubt its a good idea to have it. I'm just curious if anyone has ever USED it, and what the outcome was.

I do "strolling" magic at a resort here in Orlando, FL out by Walt Disney World and it was a requirement of the resort that I have this insurance. Very inexpensive and a necessity in this day and age. I got mine right from the advertisment in The Linking Ring. They were fast, courteous, and answered all my questions. |

Consider this... if you have no assests someone can sue your for, maybe it's not a good bet to pay for the insurance. if you own a home, have a savings account, 401K, etc, then you NEED the insurance.
Also, if you do corporate work, you may need to purchase the insurance to satisfy your contract with the client. (as with the Disney example above) The possible scenarios are endless. Anyone can sue you. We've all heard outrageous stories. Bottom line, the insurance is very good to have and it's really cheap. The premiums are based on your gross income so it's scaled that a even a part time performer can afford it. So, if you are 20 years old, drive a 30 year toyota, rent a studio appartment have no savings or assests and you don't do corporate work, I'd say you're wasting your money. It's a personal and business decison you need to make. hope this helps you put things in perspective! PS... you never know what incident may turn into a claim. a long time ago I had a freind who had a freak accident and actually set a ladies hair on fire. She could have had a really richeous claim. (she did not sue) My friend was a long time working pro - he wasn't an idiot... it was just a pefect disaster. so..... you never know!

Thanks for the info nucinud. here is the link for others who may be interested: http://www.specialtyinsuranceagency.com/......nce.html
Looks like this would be cheaper for some and more expensive for others since the insurance offered by the IBM is based on income. (starting at $111/year). I paid mine again this year but still wonder about the quality of service one would receive if a claim were ever filed. Do you think they have EVER had anyone file a claim? If so, wouldn't you love to know the circumstances and outcome? |
