I'm pretty new to magic. Should I buy an ordinary cup and ball set or a cup and ball/chop cup combo set?

I would recommend the basic set and focus on the sleights. Sometimes its tempting to trust too much in a gimmick and not explore all the possibilities.

In my opinion, you should get a straight set first, along with Michael Ammar's 2-DVD set, "The Complete Cups & Balls," click HERE for more info.
Later on, if you want to play around with a gimmicked set, you can always do that. Once again, it's only my opinion, but I think that if you learn the basic sleights, you won't need the gimmicked set. If you come over to the "Ever So Sleightly" section of the Café,' you'll find plenty of C&B workers to talk to. Good Luck! SETH

I use the chop cup and balls. However, I only use the gimmick for one, completely impossible, blow their socks off vanish. The rest of the routine is completely ungaffed.
I would learn an ungaffed routine first, but that doesn't mean you can't learn it with the chop cup and balls.

If you do get the Combo set, don't do so unless you can find a copy of the Mendoza Cups and Balls Routine which uses the Combo set specifically and just Rocks! Best,

My suspicions were confirmed. I think I'll focus on the basic cup and ball set. Thanks for all the advice.

One suggestion -
Try and find a cups set that, later on, you can match a chop cup to. You will be thankful you did.

Something else to note... There are plenty limited releases, gold plated, spun copper, polished brass, signature series, etc. I saw Lance Burton do a great routine with everyday coffee cups. Just my 2 cents worth.

I am of a different opinion. I would say go for the combo cups. There is no rule that says you have to use the combo cups as a gaffed set. Use them as a standard set, as a combo set and chop cup (you will have to get another set of balls). Do get something nice and heavy, you won’t regret it. I still have my original combo cups from 30 years ago.
If you search TMC, you will find many recommendations as to what cups to get. Good luck, Bruce |
