Hello there, I'd like to find out if the new animations book on the Dancing hank is worth buying. I have the Sean bogunia PTS junior but at times, I think it could be a little hassle seting up. I feel somehow, I'm more confident with an assistant. Electronics can fail and sometimes, working with a human is easier. No doubt, PTS jr. is good, but for research purposes, How's New animations??

Hello!
I have New Animations by Mike Ching. Is the book worth of the price? Is a good question since I have found myself asking the same question by the time I finished it. In my opinion is very interesting to read how to acomplish an effect, but the effect is not as well described as it should and of course what I have found is that the book has no finished act, I mean, you won't find a complete act, only ideas yo create your illusion and sometimes not clear written. The drawings are sometimes quite difficult to follow the t****d schema, since the drawings has t*****d joints and Mike Ching has not drawed it taking consideration wich draw line is above the other. Another drawback is that the book is sold with a lot of incredible names like Ralph Adams, John Calvert... but the truth is that if you are expecting to find Mr Calvert's hank act (Casper) you will be dissapointed, in fact, the only act explained a little is Ralph Adams' but of course only ideas and hows without a deeply study in the subject. But its only my opinion. D |

Save your money and do some more research. There are great works out there on animations that do not need a tremendous amount of sent up and are very Impressive. John Calverts has already been mentioned as one. I own a copy of casoer and otherthan the music it is a solid dancing Hank routine.Simple to set up and operate. There are more complex versions out there as well but you have to remeber to keep it simple.

I think the Mike Ching book gives a good overview of the various methods.
As been pointed out the routine is the thing no matter the method. I just worked with John and his routine is very good. It may be a little dated in some aspects but it still plays well. There are also some technical things about his that are different from others. There are pros and cons to all. I have worked with Blackstone and Ralph Adams and both routines worked very well. Both are relatively simple to work. Ralph Adams used to train the girls at Sea World do his in about a half hour. I would think of a story line or what you want the hank to do and then work out the method. Rlchard

NEW ANIMATIONS was designed to give you the nuts and bolts of the Dancing Handkerchief, and an understanding of the physical properties *(lines, lighting & Backdrop) that make threads "dissappear". What angles NOT to light from and why a black backdrop is generally considered a bad choice.
It was created out of my own affection for the effect, and desire to understand stage line work. If you want to understand how to light and rig for routines like the dancing hank and floating ball, I would say you can get a lot out of the book. It is in the libraries of many of todays top artists. Several have told me they find it of great value to their work with many methods described. If you are the type who can absorb a lot of ideas and put together your own routine it might be worth your while. If you are looking for routines to copy then invest in the individual routines themselves. Blackstones & Calverts routines are Copyright and sold by others. If you are seriously interested in the effect, you should pick up everything on the subject you can and go from there. It's true in this case, Knowledge is power and there is so much to learn. Still, why would you want to create a carbon copy of an existing act? From interviewing people like Blackstone, Adams, Charles Reynolds and more, it became apparent that original routines are the strongest, and no one presents it quite the same anyway. Search "New Animations" and you will find other threads with other opinions. Best Wishes & I hope you create a wonderful routine.
