Why hello there...
Believe me I have searched t'internet and various magic forums including this one, and have read that for the "special something" (I'm not sure if this classes as exposure so feel free to delete if inappropriate), i.e. the refill is in effect a nichrome wire. If anyone uses Pyrofreak could they confirm whether purchasing nichrome wire from a hardware store or Maplins would actually work? If so, it would make my life a lot easier. Also, does anyone know where I could purchase the replacable plastic bit once it's melted (other than opting for the official Pyrofreak refill, as I can see myself spending a small fortune on refills otherwise) Have left this post relatively ambiguous so only Pyrofreak users see where I'm coming from. Also, does anyone else suffer from slightly yellowing finger tips from flash paper? Fire magic has only recently been integrated into my magic, and whilst I love it dearly, I do feel that a financial Pandora's box has been opened in that flash paper is pretty expensive. Also, I find the fine tissue like paper to be a lot more effective than the thicker material. Regards Rufio |

Have you tried emailing Jim Pace?
I think that would be the best route for your questions. |

I have emailed the official seller of the product (www.my-magicshop.com) and their response was pretty good, who confirmed my suspicions about the wire, but as to the plastic part even they were unsure of where to find it or even what the component was called as it is a safely guarded secret by the manufcaturer / creator. I suppose this is fair enough, but my only gripe is after spending over £65 on this, I effectively have to fork out a total of 12 euros to purchase the refill (which includes shipping), but what I would get is approximately a 7cm wire (of which you can actually purchase 10 METRES for £1... effectively, as no one knows what the plastic thing is I will have to contine doing this. I don't mind spending money (i'm not a professional, but a pure hobbyist), but I just find it ridiculous that magicians are effectively forced to purchase items they cannot source anywhere else. it also irks me that the manufacturer is making an absolutely unfathomable profit (being in mind that 7cm out of say, 10 metres is fairly neglible, and the cost of a small piece of plastic is equally as neglible, it seems to be be pure profit. Don't get me wrong, I thought the email response from magicshop was excellent, so I hope this doesn't sound like a rant. oh well. c'est la vie.

My bad I was completely wrong about which type of fire starter you were talking about. I got the Igniter mixed up with pyrofreak.

No worries. I was very tempted by Jim Pace's Igniter, but the summer months and the prospect of wearing a jacket seemed to much of a faux pas.

Thank you rufio. This tip was very helpful. I agree with you. When I saw the materials I thought they were meant for us to get them at a local store. I was surprised they didn't tell us where or under what name.

Incidentally, I have not got the diameter of the wire right yet, but I'm guessing that 0.16mm or perhaps 0.08 should do the trick (I got 0.24mm). Otherwise it's too thick and you end up breaking certain plastic items. Hope this doesn't give too much away. If anyone knows of what the plastic holder is called then PM me. It would be much appreciated. Good product tho. But whilst it's out of action I'm just using a lighter to light flash paper, which I should have used initially - I simply bought this item with flash paper which I bought for the first time. Had I initially bought flash paper and played around with it perhaps I would have learnt that you can actually practice flash paper technique and work on your angles to make deck productions ostensibly invisible and out of thin air, with no apparent ignition device (other than a normal lighter to ditch). Having said this, I still recommend Pyrofreak, as it does make the whole process that little bit more invisbible, and I guess gives scope for other uses, as shown in the demo.
Again, if I could reiterate if anyone who has Pyrofreak could PM me with details of a certain thingamijig, I would be a happy bunny. |

The refill is a battery that has nichrome [sp?] wire attached to a AA battery.
Soldered on one end and loose with space made by foam tape. This package is wrapped in black electrical tape. You can buy the complete refill which is the battery already setup. Last time I checked it was $20+shipping. The new version is rechargable, but $90!~!
Still with the Chinese circus
