I have been searching for the perfect "styrofoam cup roulette" piece for a long time. I needed an item that was instantly recognizable as being deadly, but which had a sure-fire, 100% safe method.
Spike meets my criterial. Here's what you see. You have a four inch long, 1/2 inch diameter spike which comes to a sharp point. This wicked-looking spike fits perfectly into each of three wooden bases that are unmarked in any way. A member of the audience places the spike point-upwards into one of the bases and covers each of them with a styrofoam cup, while your back is turned. With only as much byplay as you feel is necessary, you know in a matter of seconds exactly where the spike is located. You smash two of the cups down, and show that the spike is under the third cup. If you wish to use more cups in your presentation, you can, of course, place inverted cups anywhere on the table. They will look the same as cups that are over a base or over the base that holds the spike up. You get the spike, three bases, a DVD explaining how to do the routine, plus some performances, and the special extra item that makes it all work. I am replacing another item with this. It's not because the other item was in any way inferior, it's because it took quite a bit of time to explain what the other item is, and the spike is basically self-evident. I already have enough "back story" in my presentation that I did not need to add a backstory about the prop. According to the fellows at World Magic Shop, this item is sure-fire and 110% safe. I would caution anyone who works with an effect of this nature to be certain to pay attention when performing it. There are no electronics to fail, and it can be performed blindfolded. In fact, in a recent competition, a blind magician actually won an award competing with this trick. I like the fact that it can work for just about any size audience, from close-up to stage. The spike is visible at a fairly good distance, and reall does look wicked. At £ 115, it's not cheap; however, when it comes to things like this, you don't want cheap. You want reliable!

Mr. Palmer I think you will be very happy with this in the long run as well. I have been using mine now for about two years and it still is in great shape. Through regular use of it I have found that occasionally I will run into a spectator who is truely squirly and they will steal the spike out completely. At this point I will in rapid fire succession flatten all three cups and then use a bit of muscle reading to find it. Usualy not nessisary as most will drop into a back pocket. Thusly revealing from there.

Traitor!
Where would someone buy a perfect spike with nice little wooden bases to put it on? AT A MAGIC SHOP? It's soooo mysterious Bill Bill Bill, you've sold out true storytelling for something that could only have been produced to do one thing, hide under a styrofoam cup. Still love you man. Hope you can live with yourself in the morning. you used to be my friend. Don't call me. We're breaking up. You can have your Carpenters 8 track back. |

Rest assured that I will still be keepint and using my Scorpion. It's a great item, but doing two backstories together was putting a big space in the presentation for me. I'll do Scorpion with a different backstory.
Two ways to maim yourself are much better than one!

I have Spike and don't use the bases. They look like candle stick holders to me. I just like pulling out the spike and sitting it on the table. Works like a charm.

This trick of course has a high risk, but in other side has a great effect....
for me, most important, use my own hand (performers hand), don't use your spactator hands....... |

I have two questions for those who use someone else's hand:
1.If there is a possibility, no matter how small, of slamming a helper's hand through the spike, why would you do it? 2. What will you do when you push the spike through your helper's hand?

Hai jon,
I'll try to answer your question 1. I use it for entertainments. in my country, this a challenge for me, and my audience like it very much instead I use my hands. 2. this trick 200% save for me,.. for me!!! and if I doubt I don't do it. in the stage, I have 2 assistant to control this trick, if someone try to change, or put another spike before, during, and after I perform. many possibility will be happen for this trick, who knows!! again.... not recommend best regards, Rick |

Two things:
1) ANYONE who performs an effect like this using another person's hand is a fool and should not be allowed out in public. I'm serious. It's one thing to spike yourself. But to spike an innocent spectator -- that calls for serious punishment. 2) The version that seems to be the most problematic is one that is supposedly foolproof. It uses a visual cue that is almost impossible to miss. So what goes wrong? In one case, the performer reported that he couldn't see the visual cue, so he went for the one he thought was correct. STUPID. In another case, the performer got nervous and went right for the one he knew he was supposed to avoid. STUPIDER. If you approach this with the proper reverence and the proper precautions, your chance of being injured is almost completely eliminated. But remember the words of Mark Twain -- "Nothing is foolproof, because fools are so ingenious."

By The way, this trick has so many variation.
Scorpion, Spike, Fruit salad, Dangerous monte, Smash and stab, devil's nail, real danger, rusian roullette.......... witch one is the best effect? and witch one is the best for safety? |

There is no "best effect." It all depends on how YOU present it.
The safest is Scott Alexander's "Shattered."

All the versions that use nails or spikes of some description have a 100% safe method; it is the process that is not 100% safe.
Shattered is brilliant.
