I am not doing this myself, and anyone who gets a good ideas from this can go and run with it, but here is a question:
Would it work to do the Girl through Glass - aka Allice through the looking Glass with a metal (or some other opaque material) barrier instead of glass? I mean this in two ways 1. Can it be built practically. 2. Does glass just look and work better? Just thought I would throw that idea out. |

Aluminum foil works good for me; the thinner the better.

An opaque version is definitely possible. It's been done many times with a mirror. (Wish I had photo links at my fingertips, but alas...)
Glass and mirrored surfaces have an inherent quality that makes the illusion possible. Steel, wood or any other barrier doesn't have the same ability. Although a sheet of perfectly polished stainless steel would work, I suppose...but that essentially makes it a mirror surface, too. I think audiences also know that you can't put a hole in a sheet of glass or mirror without the edges being visible. Other opaque materials could simply have a trapdoor in them, which would make the illusion seem easily explainable and much less effective. Also, there may be a subliminal "danger" aspect to using glass or mirror. If the magic doesn't happen, the plate could shatter and injure someone. (Not really possible since most of these props use plexi for weight and portability, anyway.) Cheers! Dan Wolfe, aka. "The Amazing EARL" |

AH, I hadn't thought of the "trap door" look to say a wooden penetration.
Now here is an idea - Penetration of two panes of glass with something between them. Say water or another liquid - water with little fishes in it? - or dirt - maybe an "ant farm" Just another idea. |
