I may be called upon to do a magic show for a theme knight our church is doing. The theme is Western (cowboy/pioneer) The character that I am thinking of going as is a reformed snake oil salesman/hustler who is performing some community service entertaining and teaching.
First a bit of background on me….I am in no way shape or form a pro…just a hobbyist But I have done a dozen or so small shows for family and friends. This would be my first foray in to a bigger audience. Here is a loose overview of the routine that I am thinking of doing. Any thoughts comments etc… would be much appreciated. Opener: I was going to do a dove pan act with a live chick as a final load. Loose ideas for presentation is to explain that I am a bit rusty so to have patience explain that I have my instruction book there that …crack an egg add some salt and pepper…then start to mutter about things not making sense ….pulled out my cook book instead of my magic book. Dig in my bag….retrieve flaming book , when it opens and bursts in to flames pinch flame from book using flaming thumb tip, ignite flash paper in dove pan. Cover and open to reveal chicks. (Can any one think of any jokes to use….keeping it clean of course considering the venue) Middle section: Reference some of the trouble in my past and go in to cups and balls routine with references to the three shell game. From cups and balls go in to a comedy thumb cuff escape. Wrap up: For the wrap up go in to teaching phase…was thinking of doing the Mongolian pop knot & Torn & Restored newspaper ala Whit Hayden. Thanks in advance. Joel

Sounds good to me. The most important thing to do now is rehearse it as much as you can, from beginning to end with all the props in place and out loud, saying all the lines. If you rehearse the entire act three times a day between now and the event, you should be OK. Videotape your rehearsals if you can, but don't watch the videos until BEFORE the next day of rehearsals so any mistakes you catch and want to correct are fresh in your mind.

Hey Joel,
You say "I'll say something like", your script should be concrete...keep practicing, DAILY...Spellbinder is right! After the chicks appear, look flustered and mutter "Every Time!"...or "Oh no, not again", based on the character you're trying to portray these can work! |

Thanks for the thoughts/comments.
I am currently nailing down the script and once this is done...practice practice practice. JG

After the production of the chick..."So which came first, the chicken or the egg."
