That sounds like a great compromise. Maybe it'll free up the Café search engine for the tough stuff like member searches and posts in the more restricted areas.

And just my .02 cents : maybe time for Steve to reconsider the policy of allowing the Magic Café posts to be cached by Google. I'd rather have to live with the "wait 2 minutes between searches" if I also knew that the Café posts could not be searched using Google and therefore an easy source for exposures would be cut off .

Sure I see this nearly like you!
On the other hand you need to remind yourself not only layman will find over Google about this forum. I as a magician did too and if there would have been no Google indexing I would not be here now and maybe 30% of the other members also.

Google searches also can't return posts from specific forums, or specific users, or specific dates, or anything like that either.

You can refine your search to do such searches (see google advanced search).
E.g. if you would have a google searchbar here which is only searching in the Café and you like to search for e.g. "Pagesize" in the "Tech Help Area" you can just enter ->

Pagesize +"Tech Help Area"

in the Goggle box and would find what you look for! This really does not look for Pagesize IN the tech help area but for a site in the Forum which has both on it (Pagesize AND Tech Help Area) so it at the end would come down to the same answer!

(Just one example to give)

Please gods of the forum ( Smile) )do discuss this option to add a bar in your next meeting cause it seems to bother many.

Another idea you could incorporate maybe to reduce serverload on searches instead of the 2 minute waiting:

You said earlier on of the problems ar the millions of posts the engine has to search for each answer.
So the simplest thing to speed up is reducing them. You said but members would like to search through all posts (I agree).

Now it is this way... You search, got lets say 236 Pages of answers. Do you really believe most people will look all 236 pages up what they look for in one session? This would take months to read all threads. So they do look on hte first and then research later anyway.

So I got the following idea:

What is needed is not a search function that on EACH search reports ALL answers. But one that ONLY SOMETIMES get all answers IF IT IS REALLY NEEDED.

As seach hits are generally shown in multiple pages and you have to click anyway after looking through the first page to see more results (e.g. Page 2), you could change the search in the following manner:

1. If someone enteres a search phrase the engine only searches posts of the last 3 months.

2. On the bottom of the page below the "1;2;3;next" it will show: "Search 3 more months" "Search one Year" and "Search ALL".

Most of the people will find their answer in the result of the first 3 months (e.g. looking for new reviews). If they do want more info they click on "3 months" and get the next pages (through a new search then, surely this adds to the work but the many other unneccessary long searches will free up this time easily). So only if one clicks on "All" or repeatedly clicks on "More" the engine will have to look through all posts.

This really should speed up the search MANY times so you have enough processor power for other works to do. This way you have on the one hand a quick working search routine and on the other hand all can look through all of the forum (IF THEY REALLY NEED!).

(not to offend you, sure I understand your work put in this already. Just to help cause this really nags me Smile )

Maybe this would be an option?
Glad to hear your response.

Sven: this option is already in the search function. You can select to receive results from the last 24 hours, 1 week, 1,2,3,6,or 12 months. You can even look for a specific date. Using the defaults, will give you all the results. You can restrict the search to just one forum as well.

As default he does search the entire time!

I did not mention this cause I need the function but as an Idea how to decrease serverload to free some up for getting the 2 minute waiting off the search.

Gork, I'm not sure what you're saying but if you do a search with the defaults, the search engine looks at every post in every topic from the beginning of the Café to get the results. That's years of posts to look at. The more people doing a search the slower the reaction time. By changing the parameters when you do a search, it limits the amount of searching that has to be done.

That's exactly what I said...

If it would not look through all you could free up some memeory for other searches and get rid of the 2 minute limit. Please reread the post to understand the Idea.

I understand and what I'm saying is the each search can be modified by the individual user depending on what they are looking for. You choose how far back to search and what forums to look in

So Gork is suggesting that if the default were set to only three months, instead of defaulting to "forever", then the most common searches would take less time and less server power? And the option to go farther back would still be available to every user?

Then again, you could just make a search form that requires every option to be chosen either by typing or by drop-down selection, and then a pop-up repeating your choices and checking spelling and asking for verification, and it would use up almost two minutes creating a search. (Just kidding! Don't shoot me!)

I got what Gork was saying. Not all users are as computer savvy as others and either don't know how, or don't even know the option exists to restrict the search parameters. Making the default one of the more restricted searches sounds like a good idea to me too. That way, the more persistent user can expand the search only if it's deemed realy necessary.

Dave, I don't think it takes computer savvy to click on a drop down choice. When you enter your search word or words or user name, you have to scroll down past all of the options to get to the "begin search" button. I'm not sure how difficult it is to click a drop down menu and choose a date range or specific forum.

Well, you know what they say about common sense not being that common... Smile

Just throwing the idea out there for consideration.

You still get not the point Dave S.!
Surely each one CAN but noone DOES! So setting the default this way will speed up the mashines the search runes on and can then free Servertime for geting rid of the 2 minute waiting.

Sorry but I as computer nerd can't explain it any better.

Dave V. got what I meant to say!
