I, Dorothy Dietrich, am sorry to relate the sad news that Lou Lancaster left us on the evening of 7/5/2008.
He helped shape part of my career Lou Lancaster worked both our cabaret, our magic shows and for me as an consultant for several years when we ran New York's Magic Towne House. He was also a dear friend. He did all the original rigging for my Straight Jacket Escape that I did when I appeared as special guest star on the Home Box Office Special, "The World's Greatest Escapes!" with movie star Tony Curtis, who played Houdini in the bio pic. To be sure it would be safe we went to an auto junk yard and tested the burning rope and all the rigging from a crane that had a car motor attached and jerked it up and down to test for safety. For both the Home Box Office Special and my appearance at the International Brotherhood of Magicians yearly convention he was in charge of the rigging. I insisted he be a part of the HBO special or I would not have done it. I have on several occasions trusted Lou Lancaster with my life. I along with Cris Capehart and Presto worked with him in Times Square at Tommy Laird's place that Lou built. Those were great days and I remember them fondly. I and Lou and Dick Brooks also worked on the sidewalks of New York's Central Park when I worked there in my early magic days as a teenager at the age of 13. He taught me several routines some of which include the Linking Rings and the Chop Cup and many others. We have stayed in touch over the years, but not as much as I would have liked too, because we ended up in different areas of the country. He was a great magician and and knew more about the ins and outs of magic than anyone I have ever known. I truly cried when I heard the news of his passing. Verry sad to hear. I had the privilege of being befriended by Lou and Phyllis when I moved to California in 1984. Sad news indeed.

Back when I had just started exploring coin magic Lou showed me his open palm coin production where a coin seems to float out from behind your hand. It was one of his creations. He was also open to discussing how to build a zig-zag having just made one and a mismade woman both covered in the most amazing formica - true collector's items whoever has them. Same guy who got me started down the right path on attention management by illustrating how to turn someone's attention inward by asking them a non-visual question just before doing a pass.
He was a positive influence for me and likely for many others who were fortunate enough to be in the same area in NYC back in the 1970s. I hope to be able to pass on some of that positive attitude and willingness to support others as they learn and explore - his legacy.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Wow! Thanks for that. I would have liked to have seen a picture of him on the Home Box Office Special "The World's Greatest Escapes" helping me with the straight jacket escape. He created it for me, and I have on several occasions I trusted my life to him. I might not be alive were it not for his expertise. Glad that I contacted him in later years and kept in touch. I had the opportunity to visit with Lou shortly after I moved to Las Vegas. I met Lou for the first time at Boomers about three weeks into working in Dirk's show at the Trop. Lou told me old stories about him helping Dirk loading Dirk's old ostrich and birds into certain illusions. I gave Lou my card thinking he'd never call like most of the other "big guns" down there. The very next day, Lou called me and talked magic for about two hours straight. We discussed "Twister", some of Lou's card work, and some of his background with many people he's had the opportunity to work with. He was a kind man and loved the art!
I was just thinking I needed to get a hold of him again and follow up on a few things he had tipped to me. I'm saddened to hear of his passing and am extremely fortunate to have met Lou. There are few in our art that are selfless when it comes to helping others succeed within the industry. Outside of magic, it's sad to hear that another great person is gone. Lou Lancaster will be missed... -Bryan |

Lou was old school great. You can see him on some IMS videos.
