I have never found myself interested in rope magic, but a lot of people seem to like it. I would like to hear what you all think about rope magic and the responses you get in ratio to the difficulty of the tricks.

I have done my rope routine surrounded and close-up, as well as on a stage for 8000 people. It is just 14 feet of rope and a pair of sheers.
It kills 10 minutes and the audience. I have used it in every conceivable standup performing situation, and it has been a central part of my act for thirty years. You can learn the routine in a couple of hours. As Pete says, what more could you want? You can see my routine is here: http://www.whithaydn.com/video_clips.htm |

It is hard to beat a good rope routine and in my humble opinion Whit's "Mongolian Pop-Knot" is one of the very best. It offers some very entertaining and visual magic as well as some extremely hilarious comedy.
I added “The Mongolian Pop Knot” to my show about two years ago and it is one of the most well received routines I perform. Thanks Whit! Tony

Whit’s “Mongolian Pop-Knot” is my favorite rope routine. I love watching Whit perform it. I have purchased it and can perform it, but I’m having a hard time “making it my own”. It’s just so hard not to throw in a lot of Whit’s material into the performance. He’s a master.

I used to think rope magic was kind of boring too. There's a lot of people defending it in this thread, and I think for good reason! Before I got into rope magic, my impression of it (from reading general magic books that included some rope tricks) was that it was mostly cut and restored rope and trick knots.
Once I started exploring it though, I found there's some really awesome routines out there. Stuff like Mogolian pop-knot and Daryl's Jumping Knot of Pakistan are world-class effects. Fiber Optics is every bit as fun to practice and perform as the Ambitious Card. And well-done rope magic gets a tremendous response from audiences. I think its a lot like other areas of magic. For every routine the caliber of Triumph or Amibitious Card, there's 101 lame-o "pick a card and I'll reveal it" tricks. For every Winged Silver or 3-Fly, there's 101 tricks like, as Jerry Seinfield put it, "Here's a coin, now its gone, you're a jerk." You just have to seperate the wheat from the chaff. There's some really fun, visual, crowd-pleasing effects to be found in rope magic. Just do your research and don't be dissuaded by the lamer tricks that can be found in general audience magic books. |

OK guys, I'm convinced. I'm getting Mongolian Pop Knot. Fantastic!

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and that's usually good enough to make a decent living.

Uncleperry,
You'll love Whit's Mongolian Pop Knot, but...ummm...buy lots of rope. Yes...LOTS of rope!

Rope magic is so versatile because it can be as easy or difficult as you want, from self working, to some difficult sleights. I have seen people like David Copperfield use very simple cut & restored rope to really entertain. It's all in the presentation.
In most performances I nearly always include at least one rope effect. Some that I can think of that I have used: cut & restored rope Daryl's jumping knot professor's nighmare fiber optics linking ropes 3 colour rope ring ring off rope colour changing shoelaces grandmother's necklace rope thru neck stiff rope Most of these are pretty easy, and they all get a great response. As I said, it's all in the presentation.

it's all in the presentation. How true it is, I've been presenting my own version of Fiber Optics for about a month and the audience response has been overwelming. It's truly a joy to perform and it is just as effective on stage as it is up close it's become my "go to" routine. |

Benjamin, buy Whit's Mongolian Pop Knot and Jeremy Pei's http://www.PowerfulRopeMagic.com and you will have everything you need to develop your routine. I mentioned in another thread that I have developed a 15 minute sidewalk busking show with nothing but ropes from these 2 DVD's The preliminary response (one night in a restaurant and one party) has been GREAT and I will have it on the street in a couple of weeks.
One thing, Whit gives advice on how to "show the rope after the performance" I do what he suggested and have gotten standing ovations for his pop knot. Peter |

Daryl's thick rope he sells on his Fooler Doolers web site is the best I've used.

For some reason, rope magic is the hardest for me. But it plays so big and is so easy to carry around, I am faithfully learning the effects.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.
