I was on the road for a few days (hate it now) and while out there saw AGT. I see the first guy, or one of the first guys, is a magician who kind of introduces himself before his act. Here we have a chubby guy in eye make up dressed in a nice leather hat saying he has been doing magic for 12 years and ready to cash in on his efforts. As soon as he said his name was Michael Tricks (or Trix if he is an ellusionist guy) I knew he was SOL. What is it with people picking these names to use? Has anyone ever succeded with a name like "Mikey Sorcery" or "Lou Wanduser"? Just stop it with the names, some are horrific...and really, can we stop with the Harry Potter inspired names? Okay, so Mr. Tricks comes out (ha!) and says to the judges that they are going to experience his rock and roll magic. They prepare for this amazing act while loud rock and roll music kicks in and Mr Tricks proceeds to do regular silk productions! Dude...ever thought of actually having effects that reflect back to your character? Rock and Roll Magic? You need more than a leather hat and music for that slick.
Come on people, you can do better than that! |

MagicSanta is a screen name...and unless he is playing Santa at Christmas, his SN does not represent his stage avatar.
Selecting a stage name is important. It must reflect the personality of the magician he/she is attempting to portray. In this example, one might think of Michael Tricks as a kid magician or comedy magican...but NOT a rock and roll magician. AGT allows only 1 minute 30 seconds for a performer to "speak his message", identify who he is on stage and off stage... This is a very difficult task. Kudos to Michael for trying..I for one understand the challenges performing on AGT presents. This should be a valuable lesson for us all... Our stage name, persona, material we choose requires continuity. |

I don't use the name magicsanta outside this board. You see I was a lurker and saw a post so idiotic I couldn't let it pass so I signed on thinking it would be fore one post. Maybe I'll change my name to Andy Abracadabra, that would be subtle.
Justin, I could do better than what that fellow, and the bulk of the magicians that were on AGT (excluding illusionist who from what I've seen have done well) as could many people on this board. Isn't 'Justin Style' your third name used? |

I would love to see some of your work. Speaking of which...what's up with the cycling wear? I could use a couple pairs of shorts and a few new jerseys. Some new gloves would be nice. Do you only get clothing or are shoes available too?

There ya go, Tommy Wonder, those Euros fall for that kind of stuff. Good one though, now if we can find some one known in the US..... There are some cool stage names by the way, they just are not like "Mark Mysto".
I didn't do the bike company, my background is high tech and they were latex (ha!). The owner tells me they sell the best line of biking shoe available, custom made and all that. |

Ah, that's okay. One thing I know about you (and I don't know jack squat about you) is that you strike me as the type of guy who, if he says he is going to do something, he does it. So therefore, I believe if you could have, you would have and that's good enough for me. So, I thank you for that.

I saw that magician, and he wasn't really that good. It was just random magic done to karoke music, and those aren't a great combination . . .
Anyway, I see nothing wrong with him using a magical name. As long as he can remain consistant with his name and his act to make them logical (although to be honest, he did just do "tricks" with no motivation). |

It is a hard illusion on the assistants and the lighting needs to be perfect. It was really sad to watch that, considering he acted so smug and didn't give the judges the respect to admit he had issues. People like this give magic a bad name and make it hard for others to work and be taken seriously. WHAT A SHAME!!!!!! |

That was bad. No, this guy was doing a rock and roll act but other than loud music nothing he did before getting x'd out had to do with his character. Forget the names, the point I'm making is make your magic effects work with your character. The guy produced a red and white umbrella! Rock and roll? Produce a guitar! Look at Whit Haydn, his performance pieces match his character perfectly.

I watched that last night. The misfire was bad enough, but they seemed to be kind of just going through motions while on stage. Like they were sleep walking

Micheal seemed good at the tricks he was doing... I don't think they where bad tricks.... if he was of a different character.

Watching it a few more times, I guess it was kind of point less as well... produce a silk produce another silk, produce a parasol, produce more silks, silk to cane then vanish a candle
now I don't think they are bad effects... someone on a tv review guide said they were "amateur tricks" I don't agree with that but I think the way they are put together is amateur. its very hard to successfuly do a "barrage of tricks to music" type of thing. he would have been better off doing one thing, that was coherent and matched the music. |
