So I was wondering if anyone knew any kinds of legends that they might have heard somewhere about anyone in terms of poker cheating. for example: how scarne was famous for cutting the aces from notorious gangsters own shuffled decks.
or how forte could watch someone shuffle a deck and then tell them what cards they had by using shuffle tracking.

does anyone else know any legends, tales, or myths like this?

That's not what I meant. I meant like.. what these people are known for. like something that seems impossible or like.. it's a closely guarded secret. something like the examples I gave in the first post.

anything like that from them?

There was a magazine article written a while back wherein the author had a phone conversation with the man himself. He was asked to shuffle a new deck of cards, and Forte supposedly told him the identity of some of the cards over the phone; I don't remember if they were dealt in hands or what the exact procedure was.

Maybe Dad Stevens and his cull qualify?

Church-festival card cheater gets 6 months
Wednesday, August 6, 2008 2:39 PM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Tom Dodge |Dispatch

A deputy sheriff escorts Roland Chapa to jail.An admitted gambler was sent directly from a Franklin County courtroom to jail today for cheating at a church festival last summer.

His two grown daughters, not expecting the six-month sentence, ran screaming from the courtroom.

Roland "Rico" Chapa, 68, was found guilty in June of felony cheating and possession of a criminal tool: the king of diamonds that kept showing up in his hand at the St. Timothy Church fundraiser in July 2007.

Common Pleas Judge Richard S. Sheward suspended a 22-month prison sentence and instead imposed the jail time, plus three years on probation and a fine of $5,000. Sheward said he was open to the idea of the fine being donated to St. Timothy.

"I apologize to the Catholic church if I've done anything wrong," said Chapa, a used-car dealer dressed in a pinstriped suit.

Volunteer dealers at the church festival accused Chapa, who was drunk, of cheating at blackjack. One said a two of spades dropped from his slacks when he stood up.

Jurors found him guilty in less than 30 minutes after a two-day trial.

I never heard of this "phone story" but I believe what they're referring to is a 1995 Cigar Aficionado article written by Michael Konik called Taking Advantage in which Forte demonstrated shuffle tracking and various other advantage play techniques.

If memory serves right the a similar story about Forte is found in

"The Man With the $100,000 Breasts And Other Gambling Stories".

No phone in this story, he sat on a table with the author - or so the author claims.

I think that's the one I heard about. I actually read it here on the Café somewhere. and I remembered that there was quite some detail to it because people had figured out how to do it.

Maybe a little tiny bit out of topic but there are cool texts on Cigar Aficionado archives. These ones for instance:
